I've got my car since 2007 and normally drive it when it is dry. Shortly after I bought the car I had to replace the stty wiper motor.

I had hardly done any work and after a few a few years and lot of frustrations it was totally burnt. These motors aren't cheap, and I bought a new or refurbished one at TVR Power/Powers performance.

It wipes just once and then it is over again. What a stty thing and it has cost me hundreds. A wiper motor should drag the wipers to the left and right even in the dry!!

Is there a cure? Can these stty things be tuned?? Everything else of the system is greased and is ok.

I am totally pissed off by something that should be functioning easily......

Measure the voltages at the motor when running, it should be around 12volts, if less I would suspect burnt relay contacts in the control box in the passenger foot well.

Also measure the current draw when the motor is running, anything over 5 amps indicates some excessive friction somewhere, normally in the gearbox caused by contaminated grease binding the whole thing up.

Rain x on the windscreen can help also.

Strange thing this, my 23 year old wiper motor in the Chim has always done its job just like it would have done in the donor mass production car it presumably was made for. If the replacement burnt out within days, methinks something has not been quite right and I bet that's been an unfortunate side effect from the car not having been used in the wet... Mine has seen as much rain as anything else that has been operated in our climate for 146K miles, which is probably the key of the wipers' trouble-free operation so far.

Having said that, I do feel that it's become hard to get replacement parts for stuff that originally came from 1980s mass market cars (which have been worth f_ all for the past two decades) in an appropriate quality. A cheap-a** voltage regulator in a replacement alternator from an auto electrics factor caused no end of trouble in mine (turned out it put out 15.7 V peaks yikes) - which had nothing to do with the infamous 'TVR reliability'.

I help mine out by only using 14" on passenger side to reduce drag, have also fitted a smaller one on drivers side but can't recall the size i went with.

Also what type of wiper do you use ? as modern flat type blades will possibly add drag

A healthy motor should pull flatblades no problem. Mine has done so for the past six or so years smile

Mine were like yours seem to be now and I quickly bought the much heralded special uprated wiper motor of dry working magnificence from TVR parts.

And I have to say, it's brilliant. The joy of sitting in a car which cost £52k new, with working windscreen wipers, is something I don't think I'll ever forget, or match the rest of my motoring life.

The joy might of course be due to the relief from the arduous, fiddly and skin removing process of extracting the motor, removing it from the gearbox, disassembling the new motor, mounting it from the inside with much bodgery, reassembling it, replacing it in the car, removing it again because I put it in on full stroke having lost the position of the arms, failed to realise and was left to helplessly watch the wipers sweep gracefully over the inlet pipes- and refitted it again.

But I want to give credit to the motor.

If you have the uprated one, test the electricity involved as indicated, but if not, buy one. And a spare set of hands to replace the ones you are about to flay.

Please forgive me for acting like a dick
BUT
are you absolutely sure it's the motor coz I have had unending probs with the wiper return switch.
If, by any flukey chance, it is then here's a guide

On mine it is the control box that restricts the voltage to the motor due to dirty relay contacts.

I had a VW Sharan (forgive me) where the motor failed. The motor was a symptom of the wiper arm pivots and linkage being worn and putting too much strain on the motor. That was a bloody expensive repair that I am still sore about. German engineering my arse.

Only because its emissions are severe enough to make our cars look polite soapbox.

Should be pretty reliable when it's complete though.
