Sorry to hear that.
I suspect you'll find there is excessive play in the input shaft / main shaft when you remove the box.
I'm certain that is what caused 5th gear failure on mine.
My next job will be rebuilding the damaged box with this lot that I brought back from the US.
So 5 speeds came good in the end Paul?I suspect you'll find there is excessive play in the input shaft / main shaft when you remove the box.

Oh yes, and even with post Brexit exchange rates you save a fortune over UK prices. The countershaft wasn't from Paul Cangialosi, that was a random eBay purchase for just $100, there are lots of 070 countershafts for sale. That one says Made in India on the box, but I'm not overly concerend about that.Aide, terrible luck. If its just 5th gear thats gone would it be worth fitting this 5th gear set? It'll be significantly cheaper than a complete new set.

They are not available for our 27 spline output shaft unfortunately. As there's been quite a bit of gearbox rebuild chat on here recently it's well worth noting Readman Racing offer a close ratio gear set for the T5WC at less money than you'd probably expect. Well worth doing while you have your 'box apart. It'll give you over 60mph in first for the all important 0-60 time and where the other gears are closer together it feels like a motorbike gearbox when shifting up. It's really surprising how different the car feels (for the better) with one.

Exactly what I am intending on doing with mine as and when it needs a rebuild. Thanks guys,
I'm really not well versed in the difference between the std and short ratio either Alistar, I'll have to do a bit of reading to fully understand it and choose the strongest option I guess.
I'm less inclined to think it was play on the input shaft Paul, but I could be wrong as I've no real frame of reference. However, I had the box out earlier this year and removed the input shaft cowl/retainer to tap it for an anti rotation shoulder bolt for the tilton slave. I remember seeing the shims and checking for play once it was back together. It did feel ok, I think it was just me driving the stones out of it.
It's just fifth Will, but tbh 4th was a bit iffy anyway. Getting the gearbox out after running the tilton slave for a while will be interesting as well though. I'll be able to see how it looks and see if there are any signs of a leak at all. Plus I'll be able to find out how different removing the gearbox with the new slave is.
I wonder what the Tuscan challenge cars use?

My 5th gear just had play and would rock on the shaft and so killing the splines as well, hoping it was just the gear was a false hope..... needed a new main shaft too. 5th gear should be quite resistant to fitting on the shaft even with using a shop press. I also ground down the old spring clip to around 0.5mm so when the new spring clip was also fitted to the shaft there was no room for the gear to slide forward.

I think this is based on the custom job he did for me a few years back. If so, it should be quite good. If you can get the straight cut gears, do so, they add a pleasant "whine" - not too loud, but satisfying.alex_gray255 said:

If you aren't looking at replacing 5th I'd give John Readman a call as well. He offers very competitive close ratio sets. Gassing Station | Cerbera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
