Good idea, I'm not sure tbh though.

Might be worth giving CTS a call to inquire.

I just went for a complete new Quaife close ratio semi sync. Identical to the one in the picture.

I've got the Quaife big gears but the oem ratios. Whines a bit (see how much straighter the teeth are) but that gives it a more racey quality, plus it's supposedly bomb proof and good for redline flat shifts, not that I do that smile. One of my best upgrades.

Looking at the ratios on the Quaife website.
http://quaife.co.uk/optimise-your-t5-gearbox/

I decided to go for the std wide ratios as I prefer the longer 5th.

What's the real world difference between the two. Do they both allow for say 200+ mph?

Enjoy your new addition

This is what I went for, a great upgrade.

Reading it back Twinks I'm in stitches but Im hoping I was clear?.. lol

I meant an engine capable of 200+ is restricted by its gears capability oh and real world a run to the shops is it noticeably less shifts would the power be bogged down by the ratios etc ;P

Finally got the car out for a spin.

I got a Quaife close ratio kit. The acceleration up through the gears and widened powerband is absolutely astonishing. Just ripping around, it's a monster!

I have the Quaiffe kit too, standard ratios though.

As far as I could see, the close ratio kit actually made 1st and 2nd gears even longer (60 in 1st and 100 in 2nd?) but the 5th gear is shorter (so motorway cruising is at higher rpm). Is that the case?

Yes exactly that.

The long 1st is fantastic and the closer 2nd, 3rd and 4th are brilliantly spaced. The powerband is perfect.

5th is shorter and on the motorway it means around 3200rpm for 70mph (gps) as opposed to 3000rpm with the std longer original. But shortening it brings it closer to 4th.

It's a different car!

so I just got back from dropping my car off at CTS. After chatting with the guys there, I'm again in two minds as to CR or not.

I'm hesitating because the chap there said I should expect a whine from the box, what with the straighter cut gears.
They're an honest bunch at CTS, he even said one of his customers said the whine was too loud.

I don't want to do anything that might impact my ability to sell the car on at some point, and if the whine is "too much" for some, there's the risk I could alienate future buyers, i.e. In some folks minds a whine could be a sign of a knackered box.

I have a loud rear box (ACT) so it's possible the exhaust will muffle some/all of the whine.

I've probably got 24hrs to make my mind up. Can anyone that has had a CR kit fitted comment on the whine and how noticeable it is?

thanks in advance
Gary

How does it get off the line, does it ever feel bogged down... how does it change the road driving experience?

Thanks

If you go for a Quaife upgrade from CTS the ratios you choose (wide or close) will make no difference wrt noise as both gearsets have the same helical angle.

I have a second hand close ratio Quaife build T5 from CTS. It's in my car now.

It whines. But it's a nice whine. Like the whine of a supercharger. And as you accelerate the engine and road noise drown it out.

For me, it sings, in an indestructible way smile

Happy to let anyone have a spin up the M11.

Just pm me.

hmm didn't know that, thanks.

My decision is not Quaife WR vs Quaife CR..

anything above 3k rpm in 1st, and 2nd gear clunks. So it's in for a rebuild.

my decision is rebuild (no whine) vs Quaife CR (whine), hence my asking.

CTS is Competition Transmission Services.
i.e. gearboxman

The Quaife gearsets for the T5 are exclusive to CTS and can only get them through them.

And the stamp each T5 casing with a build number so you can find out the build details.

ETA: they're a really nice bunch of guys at CTS.
I blew a diff, they had previously rebuilt for me, on my way to Berlin two years ago. I had the car repatriated to their workshop from Germany. Bernie simply called me when it was ready to collect.
