Nah, sorry, don't agree. The software was written for a purpose, and at a cost. That cost was incurred because the long-term payback of it was worth it - allowing dealers to do stuff outside of the factory, allowing the factory themselves to do stuff outside of monitoring voltages across individual transistors (man, that'd be painful...), etc. Regardless of how useful, etc. it may be to others, it's THEIR PROPERTY. Giving away THEIR PROPERTY is bad enough, as it's still theft. But PROFITING FROM IT is something different entirely.

I say let the factory decide how they want to deal with the situation - it's theirs to make a call on, after all.

Agreed, you have a point, it doesnt affect myself who is no longer MBE... but if someone starts sending TVR emails about this etc., they could very well start getting ideas... which could work to end users disadvantage in the near future... let it be, they're well aware that many indies and owners use this 'crappy' application to work on their cars, its their call, lets not give them ammo...

I suppose its another good reason why owners should move over to Emerald, Motec and the likes.

Hello Chaps, at the risk of being flamed here is my 2p worth.

I don't agree with profiteering in this way for all the obvious reasons, most of which have already been discussed. However, this software is a tool and is essential if one is to work on anything engine related.

I am wholly against monopolies and believe that this information should be made available to one and all, through the proper channels (e.g. the Factory) at an appropriate cost. This includes manuals and updates for servicing.

Yes I know these are specialist cars, but on the whole the mechanic at the dealership working on your car will not have attended a modular course with TVR on how to care for your pride and joy. I would like a choice on who messes with my car and keeping data close to the chest blocks this. I believe that competition between servicing agents (dealers & indie) improves standards and helps lower costs, something that will benefit all of us.

After 2001 all mainstream cars are fitted with an OBD 2 connector to allow fault diagnosis and servicing (why not TVR?), for this very reason.

Also, the new Block Exemption makes an interesting read www.dti.gov.uk/ccp/topics1/facts/blockcars.htm

Cheers
Yes I have a TVR Cerbera and I'm a registered and regular user on this forum! What is actually wrong in selling this stuff? If somebody out there wants what I have to sell then they will pay for it, just as you would for anything else that you need. Where is the shame in that??

>> Edited by WHAT? on Sunday 17th April 12:46
I notice that WHAT is a registered and regular user. on his profile it says recently joined. Why was that WHAT, was it to answer the critics of your entrepaneureal activities.

I think you may find that "WHAT" created a new profile to try and hide his tracks. My guess is that "WHAT" is actually...

[Deletion of my musings as there's no proof whatsoever]

Either way, you've got till 9am tomorrow morning to remove your listing for the software. If it's still for sale when I get in to the office in the morning, I'll be dropping mails off to TVR, EBay, and possibly even FAST depending on how bad a mood I'm in. It's not cool to sell stolen goods.

Edited because my ponderings on who it might be weren't really fair.

James

Without getting involved in the arguments about the rights or wrongs of this being on ebay.

I wouldn't have thought it would be who you say it is. 3 posts is hardly a regular user. On top of that Flint is still on the english side of the border and deeside is up aberdeen way.
Unless you have definate proof of who it is then it might be an idea to delete the profile. If he does decide to come on here asking about cerberas in future then his name might already be tainted for no reason. I'm sure Ted could find out who it is if he really wanted to.

Just my tuppence as I think this is similar to Teds name and shame policies regardless of peoples thoughts on that. I wouldn't want my profile being accused of things I hadn't done.

Agreed that amateur detective work isn't needed here on what PH member it may be. Post duly updated. Either way, it's the EBay ID that's important.

I would say report him. The arguments for and against the use of this software are different for me.

I believe it is totally wrong that TVR don't make available the manual or setup software for their cars. If they made it available at a reasonable price I would have no problem buying it from them, in fact I tried to do just that when I bought my car, but they denied there was a manual or even dealer software.

I think the argument that somehow the software is too difficult to use or risks damaging your car is soley the responsibility of the owner of the car. To try and make their cars dealer only serviced is unjustifyable.

HOWEVER it is highly likely this person came about this software freely. I think trying to profit from the good will of others is indefensible.

So from where I stand the minute he started to charge for it he crossed the line of decency, and I don't much care what happens next to him.

Bloody hell! All I have done is pass on what most of you have used anyway. Independant garages use the same software, so if only TVR dealers were issued with it..........?
Anyway, considering all the fuss that SOME people are making I have withdrawn the auctions and will not be selling it again.
God help me if I actually did something serious!! FFS

Good call.

Think what's got peoples back up is that you're profiting from someone elses work, which is entirely different to the good-will of small-scale quietly passing something around to known enthusiasts.
