I used to have real probs getting a reading on my dipstick. I would pull it out and it would be smeared down its length. (Phnar)
I have had a recent oil change, moved to 0 40 and now it is easy peasy to get a reading.
So regardless of the benefits of different viscosities I will now vote for 0 40 so at least I know I have oil in the engine.

I don't mean to state the obvious, but thoroughly wiping the whole of the stick (as opposed to just the end 6 inches or so) can help prevent smearing. The difference it makes to my readings is quite startling.

I had tried that but would sometimes dip for 1/2 hr without getting a reading I felt I could 100% trust.
since moving to 0 40 I now get a reading first time.

Heh, Had my P1 in the Scooby garage recently to have the speed limiter removed, and whilst it was there I thought of Folembray coming up, so I said "oh, whilst you've got it, could you change the oil?"

Got the bill - £98 - for a fecking oil change! Err, next time that'll be one for me then.

Jesus!

We had the smearing problem on our Cerb when we 1st got it. I then worked out if you check the back of the dipstick (the side without markings), you get a perfect reading every time !

Gazzab.
What made you move to mobil 0w40. Was it just to be able to see the oil on the dipstick.
I was thinking of moving off 0w40, and putting in Mobil motorsport 15w50 to try to cut down oil consumption.

Whilst we are in the realms of innuendo blimey 1/2 an hour. What do you do for the other 29 minutes and 30 seconds?

Ho ho!!
Went to 0 40 as that is what TVR recommend and I am not sure I agree that 15 40 is 'better'. I have seen a slight increase in oil consumption but nothing to worry about.
