Hi Guys, well after Saturdays great run to the coast its time for me too upgrade methinks.
Anyway I have my heart set on a Cerbera. So this is a shout out for some advice on what to look for. I have found this one http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/276560.htm.

I seem to have the insurance, and road tax bits covered, So what should I look for in TVR'S that might need replacing or go wrong.

I have e mailed the owner and he seems nice enough so will prob go and take a look this week.
But thought I better get some advice from other owners.

Thanks
Phil.

From what I understand on cerbs (Not alot), its often better to buy one with higher miles that has had all the expensive work carried out on it. I'm sure the skirt wearing TC will be along shortly enough to give you some advice. smile

Btw, great idea!! If you are gonna do it, do it properly!! thumbup

I have a few questions for you as I also really, really want a Cerb.

1. Will this be your only car?
2. Do you need this car to get you to work every day?
3. How many miles do you do a year?
4. Can you affort to fix it if it breaks and you'll be with without it for a few weeks etc.?
5. General maintanance, if you're doing 12,000 miles a year or more it's going to be expensive, again can you afford it that's a minor and major service and all that requires?

I came to the slightly irritating conculsion that as i seem to be doing close to 20,000 miles a year and can only have one car that a Cerb is not for me until I can have two cars, however I will own a 4.5 at some point in the next few years.

There is loads of information on this very website in the Cerbera section, I would take a long hard look before buying, I don't mean this to sound negative, just trying to explain why I currently don't have one.

Great stuff Tim,

It will be my only car
I will use it to get to and from work
I drive around 6 - 7000 miles a year
Yes I can afford the servicing to a degree. (not sure how much a new engine is)

Having a look at a second one that is on here too. 44.471 miles Clutch replaced at 40.000
new exhuaust as the last one rotted. 3 owners now for sale from Fenchurch.

I very nearly bought a Cerbera but as the only car I would own i had to rethink, however some of the 1st year costs on my Audi havent exactly been cheap, also bare in mind for those costs you could get a rotter, and run that on the daily? I used to do this when I had a 100mile a day comumte
Golf Diesel

Hope this helps

Please bear in mind that your annual mileage will soar. You will be over the moon and want to take it out to all sorts of meets, and will be driving it alot! smile

I love TVR's but I have to be realistic. I could afford to buy a very decent example, but, I could not then afford the maintenance. I think you have to be real about the possibilty (and I'm not knocking them) that any TVR has a slight risk of needing rebuilds, and serious work done to them. I am no expert on TVR's but I know a fair few owners, and I can think of 2 Cerbera's owners I have come to know on a relatively short time on PH who have spent up to 18 grand AFTER they bought the car on essential maintenance.

By all means follow your dream and I wish you the best of luck, I just would hope you earn enough to cover the "risk" (as it may not need it) of any work...

In the two and a half months I had my Chim I had to spend over a grand on sudden major faults. Couldn't wait to see the back of it. Still, I know Tiv owners who have issue free cars. The best advise is to buy on condtion and it will need FSH otherwise I'd be very suspicious and walk away.

Maybe it would be best to take a serious TVR head with you on purchase to inspect the car?

I went for a Tuscan after lots of looking. Thought I could afford it and can just about but does get depressing as there does always seem to be something to fix on it and usually a hard to come by part or something that was crafted by TVR and a pain in the ass to repair. BUT the driving pleasure does make up for it. I thought would only do 6k per year but has been 12k since Feb now, but a cheap ebay second car has now ruled out the silly TVR to the post office trips! Go for it, good time to buy prices are low. I personally would go for a Tamora or T350 though over a cerb, unless you really want V8.

4.5 Cerb

10,000 miles in just over 6 months -

New Brakes
New Tyres x4
New Exhausts - manifold down to tail pipe
6k service
New throttle return spring (scary)
New Brake Light Switch
Other stuff I've forgotten.

£2,400 ish

£800+ for the 6k service, everything else (bar the throttle return spring/brake switch - £6) was changed/sorted because the car has to be perfect.

The APJ engine is bullet proof and won't need a rebuild (unlike the speed 6 engines) - I think there's a 120k car around that's still making its owner grin like a fool - your cheeks will ache every time you drive it.

If you want one, can afford one, have £3k left in the savings account and will look after it - you MUST own one at least once in your life; after you have it you'll be upset you didn't buy it earlier.

Things to check -
History
History
History
(Recommended Indie or dealer)
Chassis – some prone to rust (waxoyl’d?)
Regular use – they don’t like sitting around
Electrics
And a ton of other stuff (I got loads of help when looking for mine) –
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I just got back from a 4 mile return trip – put 20 miles on the car, happens every time, you get to the top of the road, think ‘hmm there’s some twisties just round the corner…(bring, bring) “yes honey”, “you only went to get some milk, where are you?”, “Sorry honey (BANG), can’t really hear (POP) you, (BANG, BANG, POP…BANG)…”’

You get the picture.

Buy one and don’t listen to Porsche drivers, they’re just jealous (duck).

If you’re local (around the M25) PM me and I’ll take you out for a spin.

D.
