..why do you need a different starter motor chip for a 4.5 from a 4.2? Just idle curiosity, you understand...

the main reason will be the different inlet designs .. on the 4.2 you get the fabulous cast alloy inlets with proper injector - under - butterfly arrangement.
On the 4.5 you get those funny purple things with the injector firing onto the back of the butterfly .. yuk. Supposedly good for power, but as we all know the 4.5 cerbie just doesn't deliver on that score in std form.

hope that helps.

So what does a 4.5 cerby deliver in standard form? Exactly what can be done to mod the engine?

Cheers,

Rob

Remove 4.5 engine, place 4.2 engine in bay

Ok I'll get my coat

I'm still thinking about those inlet mods, I know it is only a little bit of power but all the little bits add up..

From what I've been told and understand, it appears that the main difference is the inlet manifolds of the 4.5 are one of the main contributing factors to the higher power output. I suppose if you could devise some less restrictive inlet manifolds for the 4.2 such as using 4.5 manifolds it might help. But as per the previous note this would probably effect the fueling and injector usage.
Although this could all be b@llocks!!
Has anybody had the inlets on the head polished and ported, and did this make any difference? What about trick multiple throttle body arrangements and or carbs has anybody tried these routes.
I think the general consensus is standard is good enough so just leave well alone "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!"

Apparently the whole 4.5 inlet thing is flawed anyway and the 4.2 inlets are better. Even better still would be the tuscan race inlets, which I think someone fitted to a purple cerby (along with NOS).

Porting the heads does help and is the basis of the red rose conversion I believe (along with higher CR and bigger injectors?).

I think someone fitted 4.2 inlets to a 4.5. Was it you Joolz?

Joolz has some modified inlets for the 4.2, apparently the std ones are quite restrictive. Soo tempting...
Not sure about the 4.5

Carbs!? Luddite! It already has multiple throttle bodies. The main problem with any major inlet mods is doing the engine remapping. Anyway, why bother? Cerbies are hardly lacking power...

Yeah, and then sold it after destroying lots of rear tyres for a car with only 1500cc

PS Still got some part used rear SO3s kicking around (3mm ish left), free if you collect!

4.2 v 4.5, is there much difference? 60-70bhp would suggest there would be. However I'm told there are some pretty quick 4.2's out there and some under performing 4.5's, what is the truth?

They're all around 320 to 350bhp. The 4.5's seem to vary more. Get out and buy one based on condition and how it drives; probably more important! The difference between 350 and 400 is much less than 250 to 300+, so don't worry too much about it
