On checking around about regassing the aircon, I'm being asked is it 134A or R12?

Means nothing to me - anyone?

134A refrigerant gas is the newer and more environmentally friendly. Id be pretty sure that on a 96 car this would be the gas used. It should say in the handbook and probably under the bonnet somewhere.

In fact I think that R12 is now illegal as it is a CFC.

As Julian says, make sure they fill with PAG oil (to lubricate the compressor) and add the ultra-violet dye to help find any leaks in the future. From memory, the system will take about 1 kilo of refrigerant (if you are asked). Your car will almost certainly be R134a, and this should be printed in white letters on the A/C pipework.
