Had a caterham 7 (Dedion I think) behind me yesterday on a straight country road. I accelerated hard from 20 up to 110 red lining (buzzing) as I went and the bugger remained behind me all the way! I can understand it round the twisty stuff but not on a straight. I have a 4.5 Cerby. Anyone got any ideas?! as I am a bit upset.

No need to be upset: an R500 will do 0-100mph in 7.26 secs, and an R400 only takes 8.86 secs (Autocar figures).

You'll kill them both on top speed if you can find a straight long enough though.

Thanks I feel a bit better now. I will postpone the tuning modifications and removal of all the interior trim that I was planning!

Saying that it was fun!

My Caterham would keep up with some of the older sports bikes and it was just a mid range 7. Anything over a 100 and it's another story though

Did you own a Caterham then Mungo?

Let's make no bones, a rightly spec'd 7 is simply unbeatable - both through the twisty stuff, and against MOST cars on the straight stuff too.

There's an easy way to beat them though....do over 130mph. Most hit the rev-limiter in top gear around that mark, and so you will maintain your pride ! (this is round a track of course).

There's no substitute for high power/torque and NO weight !

I must admit that they are quick on track. But I never one come up against me apart from an incident on the A14 a few years back in my cerb... lets just say a Caterham wont do 150 plus...

It's not however, a fair comparison. A cerb is leather clad, roofed, air-conditioned luxury...a Caterham is an uncomfortable, cold, stripped bare, track day car. In an ideal world and if we were all rich we'd all own both.

But Only Jeremy C lives in an ideal world!!!

You can p155 right off!!!!!

I can't believe I never took any pics either! Too busy driving it! I actually had to ask the guy at the Midlands Caterham dealer (where my car eventually ended up) to mail me through some pics after I sold the car - Might have some more somewhere....

Try a few dealers and the Caterham website. They might have one the same colour....

I could always "paintshop" you standing next to one.

Agreed Matt, I kind of do too, but sad that somebody has to invent a whole web of lies like that. Talk about inferiority complex.

Almost as bad as making up a "Caterham 7" as a previously owned vehicle....
