The 500SL is a far more beautiful motor than the Maser. It's perfect proportions and classic curves are deeply desirable from any angle. More common in number, but not in class. If you know what I mean.

I think they're wonderful cars, but they look a bit weird from the front, though I can't put my finger on why. It may be the little V in the grill, just above the emblem. They kind of have an open mouthed fish look, don't you think?

Slightly off topic, but I've got a friend who's thinking of buying a Ghibli. Anybody had one? Would like to know the pros and cons of ownership.

Ghiblis are cool.
Be very careful and get an inspection done by an independent (usual recommendation is Bill McGrath). They're nice cars but make sure you buy a good un.

(nearly bought a Ghibli Cup a few years back, but in the end I was dubious about it and left the car. Unlucky for the eventual buyer as both turbos blew out of warranty on it a few of months after it was bought which cost the new owner nearly 15k to fix I am told....)

Part can be extreme , not long after i got mine it was broken into and the radio nicked , the wood surround in the centre consol was ripped out and a window smashed total bill for 1 CD player that they probably sold for 50- quid was around 5,000- of your Majestys Pounds

I seem to remember the wood surround was upwards of 3,000-Pounds

A long story - they've annoyed lots of customers and lost lots of sales but....why should they be interested in that!

If the new car in 05 or 06 looks better and has ISOFIX points in the back then I might have another but otherwise I'II stick with the Germans and their better residuals, cheaper servicing and, above all, steering that does'nt pitch you off the road if you sneeze! The Maser is nearly there in many ways but still overpriced for what it offers. Shame as I'd really like another.

Andrew - What was wrong with your steering?

Having been used to fast German cars - where the steering is very dead around the straight ahead so that you don't fall off the motorway - I found that the initial turn of the wheel on the 3200GT gave me too much direction change. On motorways and A roads I could cope with this but on B roads I found I had to back off.

Maybe my motoring skill set has been killed off by years of driving Audis and Mercs! Interestingly my Impreza has the same issue to a smaller extent but my Lotus did'nt.
