Evening all!
Im currently shopping around for a "cheap" ferrari... I know... dont start!!!

Im looking for a weekend toy thats a bit different from the TVR's and Lotus'es ive had before so thought i would look at something like a 308.

im mildly interested in this:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ferrari-Mondial-3-0-QUAT...

Questions:
Is buying something like that a huge mistake?
what should i be looking out for if i go and look at it? obviously condition/rust etc...

Good points 308Qv running gear plus four seats

Bad points almost always slow to sell & incredibly expensive tyres - some would say looks....

Rust, rust, more rust and dodgy electrics, the running gear is pretty bomb proof, as long as it's been serviced regularly (and not that expensive to do on Mongo's)

It's also worth checking for de-lamination of the glass, both front and rear, as well as looking closely at the condition of the tyres, as the milimetrics are a tad expensive (unless you go for a slightly smaller sized Avon, instead of the Michelins)

The colour combination is a bit interesting; find out if the paint colour has been changed at some point smile

Whats the maximun budget? If you were looking at that sort of car i'd spend the extra and get one from a dealer who knows them.

http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/3384736.htm is one in the classifieds, 10 years newer and half the mileage. Would probably cost less in the long run?

agree with foundy plus a much better car! well worth the extra pounds. the older ones suffer from electrics and are troublesome starters, mind you my first ferrari was a 1981 mondial! so i went through all the pains and wished i had spent the extra and got either a 3.2 or 3.4

Thanks for your replies guys, so rust and electrics - thats fair.
any particular troublesome areas to look at or poke hard?

Andrew - what do you mean exactly about the colour combo?

unfortunately, i would go for a much later car, but my budget is really under 15k

seriously then try and stretch to this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3365429.htm

the red leather will make the one on ebay very hard to sell on plus it has 80k miles on it

I looked at Mondials and came to the conclusion that the 3.4T is the one to get. Unlike the earlier ones, which use the 308/328 engine, the 3.4T uses the same engine/running gear as the 348 and has much better performance and increased power. You get a fast and usable 2+2 and the latest variant of any Ferrari is usually the best as they are a low volume car which gets developed/improved year on year. I also think that the 3.4T looks better as it has nicer body curves than the earlier Mondials, looking much less angular and flat panelled. Given the time of year and economic climate a 3.4T should be gettable at 15K, you should look at as many as possible to get a feel for the market and I would be very careful about buying one of Ebay. A poorly maintained or cheap Ferrari will be a money pit of biblical proportions and will beat even the strongest wallet and mind!!!! Beware!!!
I ended up getting a 456GT as the other half did not like the shape of the Mondial or 308GT4 and although a fabulous car the running costs can can quite a financial strain!!!!

Must it be a Ferrari? You don't mention annual budget, which is more important. For me 15k screams "air cooled 911".

Maserati 4200 GT would be the obvious alternative to me.

Red with red leather is a rare combination for a mongo (even more for a very early car with the 8/GTBi plenum) I know of a couple of Black and red cars and wondered if this car was one of those that had been repainted red.

You're right (almost). It was silver originally.

That makes sense yes - red in silver, ive had 2 cars with that combo (current included)

Yes i think it has to be a ferrari, I have looked at the maserati 4200, but to be honest i dont think they look that special, seems to have aged quickly, looks like a jag from a distance.

and 911? hmmm, no, been there, got the t-shirt :-)

Im finding it very hard to get a real idea of the valuations on these early mondeals... they seem to vary drasticly depending, i assume on what the owner THINKS its worth... I have seen them range from 9k to 20k, with very little obvious difference other than how despirate the seller is!!!
i know its hard to say, because as they say a car is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

Loved my Mondial (83 QV) It had problems but was a wonderful car to own.
I would possibly go for the 3.2. Bit more modern and not quite as expensive servicing as the 3.4T which is an engine out cambelt change.
