I have a 911 993 ('96 Varioram Targa) and am considering selling it for a Maser 3200GT, as the family has expanded - going away for the weekend with wife, 3 yr old and 5 month old in the 911 is mission impossible - before number 2 came along, I could load up the back 'seat' next to my daughter...

Question - is this a good trade - i.e. looking for a 4 seater, with space for all the stuff needed for a family weekend outing, but also a good fun weekend toy?
Was also considering a BMW M5 (2000-1).

Thanks for all the advice but my choice and have just done the deal on is a tiptronic 911 (966) carerra 4 in silver.

Having driven both this week the porsche fills me with much more confidence when driving the narrow country lanes. The masser felt as though it was not happy at all!!!

Probably a predictable and safe choice but both cars are tremendous.

Thanks for all the help...........well most people managed to stay on topic!!!

New to the site, I think its great.

Just sold 2001 911c4 cab and picked up my first Italian built sports car. I put the best part of £20k back in the pocket and drove away a 2000 3200gt. The Porsche just wasnt special enough just too many of them.

I drove 300miles back home from the main dealer with a perminent smile on my face, this is a very special car.

The Germans just do everything so well but by doing this you loose some of a cars charicter, even though this is a older, cheaper car it feels much more special. You for sure need a warrenty for peace of mind and to deal with a main dealer but with all that taken care off I feel I am on to a future classic and for sure my first taste of Italian sports cars.

Take it from me if you are spending about the same on either car you are going to get much more for your money with the 3200gt and fully warranted, just make sure you buy one from the right place. Meridian Modena highly recommended as a starting place.

Ask yourself is it to be 'pasta and red wine or a frankfurter and a beer'

This really sums it up. The difference in the Maser is not how fast, how efficient or how refined. It is just the way it does it. It has the ability to leave you giggling like a small child when you are on your own in the car. On todays roads and with cars over 300BHP then I would make the judgement on grins per mile not ultimate performance. The Maser delivers grins in shedloads.

If you want an efficent performance car for the family then forget Porsche, Maserati and BMW and go buy an RS6 Avant
