Well I did admit I was ignorant of its racing pedigree. I think the F40 is a very special thing and quite unlike the other F Cars in many ways re the concept. Much more raw.
I do remember Gordon Murrays opinions of it during the McLaren F1 development. Crude I think is how he summed it up. eek
Very very different to the 959. And very much better looking too.

Very true. A 959 is, in the cold light of day, a very special 911 Turbo - todays equivalent 997 Turbo / S gives better performance for a fraction of the price and running costs. An F40, by comparison, will always be a SUPERCAR! Personally, I'd never want an F40, because while my first drive would be perhaps the most entertaining I'd ever know, it may well also end with my death!

LFB, just a little video to help make your mind up smile

(note the downshifts, especially going into 2nd, with the exhaust cracking and popping, sounds MUCH better in real life too)

Ferrari's entry level car is quicker than the F40

And quicker than a 250 GTO. What's your point?

Pretty obvious what my point was but I'll spell it out if you like.

BB stated the 959 isn't a supercar simply because today's 911 Turbo is quicker.

I am saying comparisons like that are pointless.

I read BB's post differently. As a technical tour de force the 959 was special. Ferrari's response to it, the F40, based on technical complexity, was the complete opposite. Basic beyond belief (and why it remains Ferrari's most profitable model to date). Yet today the F40 is iconic, the 959 is not. Which I guess is BB's point. One car is left to be compared with updated versions of itself. The other car was really one of a kind.

Camlet, you get my point. However, TKF, you also make a valid point. Of course comparisons are frequently pointless - another one would be that an F40 is outpaced and out-horsepowered by a Nissan GTR! Or, to verge into Nurburgring territory, the sub-£100k GTR is allegedly faster around the 'Ring than most street-legal cars costing hundreds of thousands, if not millions.

My point was basically concerned with desirability. Along with the Countach, the F40 is perhaps THE ultimate poster car - for example, I had a poster with both an F40 and 288GTO, wish I'd kept it! Anyone ever have a 959 poster? 'Sport' model aside, the 959 was a techno-fest that could cross continents in comfort, more like a fast GT and probably usable enough to be an everyday car, I'm sure. (Did I once read that Boris Becker's first car was a 959?!) Every drive in an F40 is bound to be a demanding occasion, but also a delight for onlookers. I've only seen an F40 once in the flesh, and I think it's got to be the best looking car ever made. (My other faves are the Jag xj220 and McLaren F1, but I've yet to meet them in the flesh.) It was a snarling beast, spitting flames, special and memorable in every way. I don't want to knock the 959, because in its own way, it's still a great car - it's just not, for me, a desirable car.

Getting back on topic, the 599GTO will inevitably be outpaced and outdriven by future models, starting with the F12. However, as a 'time and place' example of Ferrari's ultimate road car, the GTO wil always be more desirable due to its limited-edition nature and the GTO badge. However cynical the usage was by Ferrari, it also places the car in a very exclusive club that means a great deal to lots of collectors and enthusiasts (alongside the 250GTO, 288GTO, F40, F50, Enzo).

Pastrana,

where did you spot the missing link.
I know one of the three allegedly built is into the Ferrari museum, but always wondered where the other two are.
Wonderful and raw to a superior level!

Having heard your car (and your 16M) leave Sharnbrook yesterday, I can vouch for the fantastic noise they both make from the outside! Seems neither you nor your wife are shy with the throttle! smile

On a side note, one thing that stood out on your GTO was the profile of the tyres - are the all the same as compared to some of the rubber bands you see on other supercars, they seemed pretty high walled - bit of a spoddy observation, but are profiles getting higher again?

Cheers! We enjoyed making lots of noise smile
Not really thought about the profile of the tyres. Maybe it is something to do with the construction of the Michelin Pilot Super Sports?
Any more pics of either of the cars? biggrin

I see those pics were taken after I'd left, or someone's photoshopped an estate roof on to my blue 360 that was parked next to the white 16M laugh
