Hi Guys, I haven't posted on Pistonheads for a ages - but i've been a member for many years. My dilemma ... My Lamborghini Diablo is currently up for sale in the PH classifieds : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3989853.htm purely due to me not using the car much over the past year or so. However, I decided to use it every day this week as a daily driver (as I used too 5/6 years ago) and it's been been fun ... perhaps too much fun ! ... now i'm having negative thoughts about selling it ! My initial plan, seeing as i'm heading towards 40 was to get something relatively 'normal' after the Diablo sells like a fairly new Lotus Evora, ie. a fairly quick car that is actually designed to be used every day. Diablo's don't drop in price and something like an Evora does so the question is what to do ? - Keep the Diablo, use it more & put some money to one side in case anything goes wrong ? - or go for an Evora when the Diablo sells, get a few years free dealer maintenance & and take a massive future hit with depreciation. Any opinions welcome. Dave

Sorry, not to be rude but - what has age to do with this question? Why does turning 40 make any difference? Balboni is 66 or thereabouts, if it is good enough for him...
As for your dilemma - I'm not sure you know what you want. It is not necessary to drive your Diablo daily.
Think about why you bought the Diablo. I really believe that special cars should be used on special occasions, as otherwise it becomes just a car. When you're stressed from work and in a rush, it is not nice when the ergonomics are Italian, you can't see any scooters or bikes in your massive blind spots, the screen is misting up etc.
My advice: keep the Diablo, drive it less but more often on SPECIAL drives, and have a nice commuter buggy (don't know, personally I like 2nd hand BMW 3-series coupes) with all mod cons and a decent boot.
It is, BTW, also my firm conviction that nothing wrecks a supercar like the daily commute (except no use at all). They need nice open roads and high revs, not dawdling.
Onno

Err Lamborghini or a Lotus?
Mmmmm. Me thinks keep the Diablo. Why do anything else even if you do only use it every now & then? Never been a big Lotus fan anyway so for me its a no contest.
I would have thought that heading towards 40 you would be thinking 'that's my Diablo there'. Yep. I'm in a good place whereas with the Lotus you would be thinking 'oh god, it's a Lotus, it doesnt start, its worth sweet FA & it was built in Norfolk'......

Dave Lotus = lots of trouble usually serious. Mate ,just be aware it`s not easy getting back what you already had,ask me how i know. Trouble is you only get that when you actually do the deed. Cheers DAVE

Thanks for all the replies and advice guys, much appreciated. fatboy69 said: Err Lamborghini or a Lotus?

That's so true - With an Evora perhaps i'd think 'there used to be a Lamborghini parked there' .. now all i've got is some Norfolk fibreglass ! Perhaps the best option, like someone else said, is to start using the Diablo more frequently again, with a half-decent run around for the rest of the week. But then again with something new like an Evora i'd feel more secure in my old age ... Now, where did I leave my pipe & slippers ?! Dave

Dave,
I'm an Evora owner, used to own a Gallardo so can probably add some advice.
I found the Gallardo a chore on anything other than a 'drive'. It was great going out on a run on a Sunday morning, but any other time I found it too much hassle. I'd imagine yours being the same, possibly worse being bigger, wider, lower etc.
However, the Evora isn't anywhere near as special. It still gets plenty of attention, but it's not a Lambo! To drive however it's very special indeed. Point to point its easier and quicker than the G IMO. It inspires huge confidence. It's also fantastic on track ( I found the G too heavy, and the brakes were poor). The Evora is actually a very good all round car. I have a thread in the Evora section on how mine has been, and being honest it's had it's fair share of 'new car niggles'. I'm hoping these are all dealt with now, and I'm told the new Evoras are much better.
I've been considering changing mine for a while now, but I cannot find anything suitable to replace it with.
R8 - Probably a better car overall, but personally I don't think it's quite as special as the Lotus, probably due to them being more common.

Dear LAM VT - I'm not a Diablo fan - never owned one or wanted to however yours looks very nice in the spec you have it - I think I agree with ONNO on this - Keep it and drive it on "Special Occasions" - Maybe you're just a little bored with it a feeling many of us know very well and comes with having a particular car a fair while - get past that by the infequency of use (you admit to that yourself) and leave the LOTUS alone (NOT a Lotus knocker having owned several from Cortina through to Esprit & Elise) - by the way your Car seems a good price for what it is.
All the best

There were some scare stories over on another Lamborghini forum a few years back where a VT owners front diff locked up at speed. This was one of the reasons, the other being shedding weight & drag hence increasing performance. At the time the engine and gearbox were out of the car & the gearbox was stripped for a repair so it made sense to purchase the SV gears to convert the box to SV spec and remove the front diff, front driveshafts and propshaft at the same time. The performance increase compared to when it was 4WD was noticeable instantly, it just transformed the car .. and no more worrying about the front diff seizing up ! I do like the look of them and agreed it's a more sensible than driving a Diablo regularly. Many thanks for this reply - it's nice to hear from someone who has done something very similar in the past. I realise what you mean about the hassle of driving it. I found the Diablo quite scary to drive for the first couple of weeks after I sold my F355 Spider. It was mainly the width that took some getting to grips with. However, after a few weeks I got the hang of it & it seems pretty much normal to me now 6 years later. The clutch is light, it's easy to judge the width (I just keep an eye on the wing mirrors - if those go through I know the rear end will fit easily though the gap too !). The only tiny guesswork is reversing up to something, but again it can be judged quite easily without hanging out the door (as per the old Countach days). It's good to hear you're enjoying the Evora too - I'll have a look at you thread. justin220 said: I've been considering changing mine for a while now, but I cannot find anything suitable to replace it with. I know of a nice Diablo for sale

Although the Evora is by no means a bad car I do think you need to have a rethink! With the Diablo it must be an amazing occasion every time you drive it. Although I don't doubt that the Evora is a fantastic car to drive it just isn't going to have that "X Factor". I would say either keep the Diablo or if you really fancy a change then go for something else that does have that "X Factor". You mention in your advert part ex for F360 or Ultima etc. These are more like the cars you should be looking at IMHO. Especially the Ultima!!!

Thanks for the reply - I have always loved the look / rawness of Ultima's & would like to own one but don't know a great deal about them. I've been looking on the PH classifieds for a while now and this one looked perfect for me : http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3735403.htm (now sold). They do seem to vary massively in price though - I've watched a few come and go on the classifieds but the pricing seems to vary by up to £20K for cars of what seem to be the same age / similar spec. (That's just how it appears to me from a quick glance at that section every few weeks).

(That's just how it appears to me from a quick glance at that section every few weeks). They certainly are raw!! You're right they do vary massively in price. I think the main factors are whether its a factory built car of a self build and also the engine and gearbox choice. Some of the older cars have old small block Chevvy V8's that are a lot cheaper than say the modern LS7 engine originally for the Corvette ZO6. A new one of these with decent gearbox can set you back around 30k so that would account for a large amount of the value of these particular cars. The car you were looking at there has an LS3 which is still a modern engine but they are considerably cheaper than an LS7, although some consider them to be the better engine. Spend some time flicking through the Ultima section, there's absolutely loads of info on there. If your interested and not too far away, the factory hold an open day every year. The next one is in a few weeks, see the link http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/Content.aspx?f=opend... Think I'll be there. But be aware, once you see one and especially if you get a passenger ride with the owner (Ted) you WILL want one!!! Chris
