Capristo ... No brainer. I personally wouldnt fit oem manifolds, mk1 or mk2. ferrari havent made a v8 manifold thats acceptable for the last 20 years. The problem is serious and there have been cases of the bits being sucked in during overlap and lunchign the engine. Get the capristo brackets as well.

How would you know if there's a problem with manifolds out of interest?

slightly! off topic - does anyone know the maximum clutch wear for an approved used car before it is replaced
IIRC it was 65-70%

Jackal's answer is very comprehensive biggrin

On mine it was making a loud ticking type sound (similar to the BMW valve lifter noise or noisy tappets). It starts off relatively loud whilst the car is cold but then either goes away or becomes far less audible as the car warms up (the hairline cracks in the manifold or gasket seal up as the metal expands, effectively resealing).

Also it can trigger really rough running and causing the car to stall. No eml and error codes were recorded.

Easier to notice if you start the car in a garage or other enclosed space. Keep a keen ear out as it can cause massive engine damage (as Jackal's story alludes to).

I think a smoke test is the way the dealers might check it.

IIRC the cracks appear 7" or so from the block on the pipes at either end. The main underlying issue is that the whole system is too stiff with the OEM brackets.

www.jackals-forge.com/TMP/manifolds.pdf

The mk2's were introduced 2007/2008. The info on whether mk2's have cracked doesn't seem to be certain. The forums seem to suggest that no mk2's have failed. What bothers me is that the mk2's are correcting the symptom whereas the capristo approach tackles the root causes in the shape of a much better designed bracket.

Note that the Scud/16M manifolds are totally different with no pre-cat and AFAIK no one has ever reported problems with these.

The later type crack too. As will all ferraris continue to do until they start using a decent manufacturer for their supply instead of Ansa. All the cars from 355 onwards are prone to it, you name it, 360, 456 whichever.Ferrari manifolds are absolutely terrible. If you take off the heat shielding from a Ferrari exhaust manifold you will see it looks like it has been welded together by a blind monkey. I've replaced plenty of manifolds on all the models over the years. As has been said already, huge fueling issues can arise, which over time can accelerate piston ring and bore damage due to fuel wash. There are several ways to detect the leak including a smoke machine, a gas analyser or closed-end pressure testing. The only real cure are aftermarket items from people like Capristo or fabspeed..

eek

Doesn't surprise me. That said, they must be a fair bit better because i've yet to come across anything forum published about a mk2 fail and as with all these things the net always gets to hear in long drawn out technocolour.

IIRC (but may well be wrong) the F1 430 system is the same as the Maserati GranSport - mine lasted 37k miles and slipped a little toward the end.

I ran it at 95-99% worn for about 7.5k miles (about 9 months) - every now and then I'd pop to the dealer and do a clutch re-learn and get a few % points of wear back and sharper changes.

The dealer said I could run it like that until it started jumping out of gear (like the OP suggests) which would indicate it was knackered, or get a new clutch when the next service was up - which is what I did.

There's loads here on the manifold issue, which I know nothing about, but my first port of call would be the dealer for a clutch re-learn to see if that solves the other issue.

Hello All,

I've just had the 'clutch wear' conversation with Carr's Ferrari at Exeter. They were selling an 08 Spider on SOR but it turned out the clutch was 53% worn. When I started to enquire a little deeper, Ferrari stated that in order to put a 'Ferrari Approved' Warranty on a used F430, they insist that the clutch is changed at 55% wear. Needless to say, I didn't buy this car as the SOR owner wouldn't budge on price to cover a clutch change....

Still looking for the right one!
