To my knowledge, #017 would be the only option that early on. Atkinson's car and the Japanese F1 GT longtail road car which were both painted Dark Burgundy were not built until the following year.

If this picture matches your memory then #017 it almost certainly is.

Peloton25 - I have finally managed to get hold of the F1 GTR shots from the 1997 FIA GT Championship from my dad (scanned from his negatives). If you'd like them drop me a PM and I'll e-mail them over. Hi res available if would like them.

Edited to add - Now online: http://www.motorcardiaries.co.uk/2012/fia-gt-1997/

That could well be the car, there was talk of it being repainted another colour but not sure it happened....
It was painted Essex burnt oak tree colour but it was never approved of by McLaren.

Peloton is now widely regarded as the most knowledgeable person on the McLaren F1 outside of the factory, If I am not mistaken Ron even has him on speed dial cool

Andy, I'm being nosey so feel free to ignore if you don't want to answer. But, without being too precise, can you give a ballpark figure for the F1's annual premium - four figures or five? Again, only in general, how does it compare with insurance for your Zonda or F40?
A customer of mine owns a F40 and 2 other Ferrari's (of lesser value). He pays £1300pa for the lot. Apparently his insurance company has the attitude that he can only drive one at a time so he pays the premium on the most expensive and has an agreed value of £400k+.

Given Andys post, get the calculator out and do the maths based on that and it should give you a 'fair' idea.

Probably knows more about F1's than even the factory itself!

Thanks for the info - if you happen to see it again have a peek in that interior. wink

I knew this car is looked after directly by McLaren and I doubt they'd get involved with adding a third seat to a GTR. Stranger things have happened though. biggrin

You've got the right GTR in those shots, but the images you are sharing date back to July 2005 when the car first came back to the UK from Australia. If a third seat was added (and it is starting to sound like that's not the case) then that activity would have had to have been much more recent.

What your pictures do show is just how much stuff is in the way of that endeavor. Hardly a simple task and I think the current owner's desire to preserve the car would trump the desire to carry a second person along.

No biggrin and No biggrin - but thanks for the smiles.

To answer your question Petrolhead95 - A decade or more worth of attention on any subject ought to allow anyone to learn a thing or two. The F1 is my primary passion - learning all about them is my goal. I like to say that I just pay more attention to these cars than anyone else cares to. In addition to learning about the cars I've also made some very good friends along the way. smile

With help from several like-mided enthusiasts, the near infinite power of Google and the internet, and a forum on AutomotiveForums.com where we gather our thoughts we've managed to piece together a lot of the story. There are still some gaps though so all contributions are greatly appreciated. I can't count the number of sources that have aided in the journey, but there have been people from all over the world who have some connection to the cars or knowledge to share who have contributed. We've attracted the interest of many owners - some who have taken the time and participated in the discussions or generated their own discussions as 'flemke' did here. There are indeed folks at the factory with their eye on me and in the past couple of years interaction with them has definitely worked in my favor. They've really been overly kind in recognizing my enthusiasm for the cars and including me where appropriate. I can't thank them enough!

It's really been amazing if you look back and see where/why/how this all started for me and the experiences I've had along the way. Sitting down with Gordon back in 2005 for a half hour chat when he came to ArtCenter in California and having him tell me I knew more about the cars than he did was one amazing moment. My first ride in an F1 a month later was yet another. With a trip I took to Italy earlier this year for the F1 Owner's Club 20th Anniversary gathering (which afforded me the opportunity to see 16 more cars) I have now seen 32 F1s in the carbon - incredible to even think about that! I still feel very fortunate each time I see an F1 as I know so many enthusiasts around the world might never get the chance to see even one in their lifetime. Lucky doesn't begin to describe it.

I enjoy nothing more than educating others and cataloging the history of these great cars. People obviously knew they were special when the F1 was introduced but I doubt many had the forethought to imagine a headline like the one which sparked this thread some 20 years ago. Anyway, to sum it up I am glad to be able to help tell the story and happy that people still care to listen. smile

If I had the millions to obtain one or more of these, a road car would top my list. An original one would be nicest to have, but there are some unoriginal ones that I still love as well. Second in line would be the road converted GTR, preferably with its original livery. Then next on the list would be a longtail GTR track day weapon.

All variants are superb, but for me too, preference is with the road car. Simply sublime.

Peleton25 mentioned a specific F1 forum over on Automotiveforums, and I'd strongly recommend this to anyone with an interest in the F1 and all variants. It's a fantastic resource for information, especially photos and old articles. If you have any questions about the F1, then I'm pretty sure you'll find the answers there. I'm at work right now and the forum is blocked for me here, but I think this is the right link (if not, someone else feel free to correct):

You're link is some strange format of the forum that comes up on Google searches.

Here's the link I'd recommend: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/forumdis...

For those taking their first look, there are quite a few threads in the stickied post at the top titled "Best of the Best" where I'd suggest you start. cool
