£3.5million for a Mac F1

I can believe it, try and buy one now for less. Personally I feel they won't ever get to GTO levels as there are pushing on for a 100 Maccers and only 36 GTO's. That won't ever change! But who knows....
What I find interesting is what will this/our generation want when they are older and perhaps have the means to buy the older cars. Personally I hope not so that in a few years today's owners of GTO's and SWB's will fall of their perch and their cherished motors won't be wanted by their beneficiaries and we can help ourselves buying through probate at heavily discounted prices. Somehow I doubt it'll happen but it would be great. Keep dreaming....
Seriously though, in 30 to 40 years will the buyers at that time still want the older kit or will it be less desirable? Today's owners wanted to own them as that is what they saw being raced when they were kids, that and the fact that in this stagnant economy they have become great investments. Who wants Chippendale furniture these days? Very people, it's all modern art these days. I know that the old stuff isn't exactly being flogged off at car boot sales but the tide/focus has turned a bit.

If I had the means, McLaren F1 would be the only car I'd ever spend millions on. There would be a garage / collection, small enough to ensure that the cars were used regularly, with some moved on as and when required. However, if there was an F1 in my garage, it would never be sold.
Funny now how the F1's lack of sales success in the 90s has made it such a valuable and coveted car now, isn't it? If McLaren had managed to make 300 road cars rather than 64, would they be changing hands today for £3.5million+ ?

I know McLaren still offer a bespoke customisation service for the F1, so - if I was ever able to get my hands on a 627bhp road car, and if I paid them enough money, could they fit the HDF kit and also uprate the engine to LM spec or beyond like #73? (I know some fans love the pure look of the standard road car, but I've always been a sucker for the GTR look with the big wing. So my dream F1 would be a road car made to look as close to a GTR as possible - so I could have a 3 seater interior rather than 2 seats, control panel / fire extinguisher, and no luggage compartments!)

Mclaren can still fit the HDF kit to an F1; as for the engine, they say that if you have the money......although it was stated at one point that only 2 non-LM road cars, #018 and #073, have the 'LM' uprated engine and (now this may now be out of date) no more would be built. For me, #073 isn't high up on my wish list of F1's. I dont like the colour nor front wing vents and the interior is not for me. Yes, I could get them changed, but why if I can get another F1 in my correct spec - the trade off being the lack of 'LM' engine [unless I bought #018, the one close to the top of my list ]
I don't think you're exactly spoilt for choice in terms of cars available? If you were in the position to buy a car you would probably have to take what was available and tailor it to your tastes subsequently. The trouble at the moment, with even anything vaguely collectable let alone F1's, is owners generally only sell for a price that exceeds what the last guy paid. Some won't sell at all.

I have feeling we are hitting a peak when it comes to GTO values. Even the mega rich tend to have a concept of value for money. Even if I was a billionaire, would I pay in excess of £25million for one? I think not. A decent SWB will now set you back at least £4 million, DK Engineering having sold two last week, I suspect they still have a lot of price inflation in them and I would not be surprised to see a road version sell for about £8 million within the new two years, in the same period a SEFAC Hotrod I think will break the £10 million barrier.What I find interesting is what will this/our generation want when they are older and perhaps have the means to buy the older cars. As for the F1, in comparison to the Ferrari's its price inflation has been steadier. The reason for this is I think is twofold, first the social scene, and the second that only a very few cars have decent race winning competition history.
Let me explain, if you own a GTO or a SWB you can almost guarantee that you will be invited to the best classic motoring events around the world, the importance of this to owners can’t be underestimated. The chance to mingle with the great and the good is very tempting. That can’t be said of the F1.
Racing success has a huge effect on car values at this level, yes the F1 won LeMans, but when was the last time that car was sold? Most of the others are just road cars most of which have been customised over the years. And last but not least the F1 is still too young to compete price wise with the older cars
The F1 owners have only recently set up an owners club, exclusive as this may be it does not gurrentee you a place on the Pebble Beach Lawn or a invite to the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. To some of these Ferrari owners a large part of their purchase descion is knowing they are now on "The invite list"
So the F1 will grow in value, but I cant imagine seeing a £10million F1 within the next ten years
