Just make sure its the Gen 2. Gen 1s can have problems just like Mazzers........

I have a 997 c4s. Looked into gt's and spoke to a few specialists. Consensus was they are reliable. I asked about part prices and a handy tip from one was that I could save some money by using Ferarri brake parts which happen to fit. I found this equally amusing and off putting!

Yep,but not sure why that would be off putting? 550 brakes fit.

That would be the one that sounds awesome, can carry more than a dozen eggs and a loaf, and makes the hairs stand up on end every time you go near it, and is also reliable....?

No problems with mine (4.7 Auto) in two years.

911 is a different car and brings out more negativity in people to my mind. I have kids so need the extra seats. Prestige coupes' with space are hard to find!

Some nice balanced opinions there from av185!!! What is quite sad is that he comes over from the Porsche forum and tries to give an opinion on a car he has very clearly never driven for any length of time and as such can only provide the OP with his own prejudice and speculation, both of which are very wide of the mark.

The views given by the rest of us are given as owners, who have very real knowledge and experience and can tell the OP what these cars are like to live with on a daily basis. Most of us have also acknowledged that if you put a 911 and a GT on the same track and timed them, the 911 would beat the GT and if that is where you want to spend the majority of your time then the 911 is far better suited. However, in the real world on real roads I have no problem keeping up with a well driven 911 as the GT has a very good chassis that can make the most of its power advantage most of the time.

In terms of reliability I would wager that as a percentage of total cars produced, Porsche have a far higher percentage of cars with significant engine problems than Maserati. The issues with the 996 are well documented and it would appear that the 997.1's are suffering a similar fate, which is not much of an incentive to buy into one and a very serious reflection of the engineering that has gone into these cars. In addition, from my own experience the 3 Maseratis I have owned (my GT for the last 4 years) have been far more relaible than any of the M Series Bimmers I have owned, by some considerable margin, which I think speaks volumes for where Maserati are these days.

I think it boils down to this, some people prefer to follow the crowd and take comfort from the fact that all these people doing the same thing can't be wrong. Others tend to think a little more independantly and like to look at some of the less obvious choices but ones which actually offer greater overall rewards, I know which I would prefer!

Well put Colossus, yes the 911 may be faster but it's no where near as involving, too clinical.

As stated, two different cars indeed one you buy with your head, the other with your heart.

Had mine four months, I'm not going to get into a willy waving contest about the benefits of a 911 over a GTS or vice versa, suffice to say that one poster on here has managed to firm up some peoples negative perception of a certain brand. I've never really got 911's other than the harder-core variants which are fantastic, but the other versions leave me cold, in driving experience, looks and interior, and that's off the back of doing several driver days flat out at Porsche Silverstone in 911's of various types.
They are,(911 and Maser)2 completely different cars. The GTS is a Grand Touring Coupe, with few equals if you take 4 proper seats into account. I'm 6'3",and can still get adults behind me if required. That won't happen in a 911/XKR/DB9/GTR or anything else. It gets fantastic attention wherever it goes, all in a positive manner, and I'm actually very surprised how highly the brand is thought of with everyday folk. The MC-Shift version is simply one of the best sounding production cars on the road at the moment (going by what others say when I go to meets)has the ability to turn off the noise, soften the suspension and gearchanges when you're not in the mood, and in the right colours it's a lovely looking thing (though of course purely subjective). Servicing is every 2 years or 12.5K miles (at approx' £1200)and I've just paid £670 fitted for 2 new OEM rear tyres at a Main Dealer. At 38K miles my clutch wear was 58%,and that's about 2600 quid if it eventually wears out, which on that basis will be at around 60,000 miles-ish. My main dealer has never had to do one, and the MC has been out 5 years. On a run,I get 22 mpg, around town that will of course drop. Mine came with an extended Trident bumper-to-bumper warranty, which I've not had any mechanical need for.I have used it for some trim where the leather was coming away ( apparently a bad batch) and for a windscreen which had started to delaminate a couple of mm at the top. All was done without fuss or quibble. You'll get the odd quirk, which will disappear as quickly as it arrived.
What the car isn't....is a sports car ( and I don't consider a 4 wheel drive 911 Targa automatic to be one either).On tight corners you are aware of twirling the arms a bit more than you want, and pulling it round rather than driving it through. On sweeping bends and open roads it's simply a joy. Depending on what car you're coming from, they'll be times when you wished it had another 100 horsepower,I do when I've just driven my Noble M400.If it HAD to be the choice of the two, if I needed a GT it would be the Maserati full stop, rather than any 911 variant. If I wanted a sports car, I'd be looking at a hardcore 911, either way I wouldn't sell my M400 for one.

As if you need to own a Maserati to know they're incredibly unreliable and generally awful cars to own. My mates uncles wife brother once heard a bloke say his mate used to own one and it was rubbish. You don't need to know any more.

Of course, if you own one and run one you might think differently.




I do own one and love it to pieces. Best kept 'secret' in motoring.

Colossus, thank you for your compliments about my opinions. Before you call the Mafia, I wasn t aware that any subject on PH was for the exclusive postings of members with specific vehicles? The OP has requested feedback on the GT but his wife quite understandably would prefer a 911. Hence my postings.

For the benefit of the OP, and so no one is prejudiced in any way, I would suggest that the 911 is not just a car 'for simply getting around corners as fast as you can' as you say. If you think that, you clearly haven t driven one and understand what they are about. You also state, 'in the real world on real roads you have no problem keeping up with a well driven 911'. That is a meaningless statement and would clearly make a lot more sense if you said which model 911 you are referring to! 3.6 Carrera perhaps?

Personally, like you, I am a great fan of the real world and real roads. And that is why I drive a perfectly balanced 2 wheel drive 911 GTS which is suited to faster A and B roads in the UK. Yes, I have owned, used and driven many other fast cars, the vast proportion of which, like the GT are more cumbersome. And therein lies part of the main problem, in my opinion. The 911, in certain variants in particular, is the only fast usable everyday car which due to its moderate dimensions can be used and taken anywhere (including narrow back roads in the Lake District). AND, like the GT, you also benefit from rear seats!

You say you 'would wager' a higher percentage 911s have engine problems. Do you have any figures to substantiate that for the benefit of the OP? I too, have owned a good number of BMW M cars (e39 M5, e36 M3, e46 M3), and have not had any major issues either with the cars or dealers.

AV185, I refer to my earlier post.....did you not have a major engine problem with your 911,according to your post history?
You do rather come across as only your opinion counts. I'd also suggest it's stretching credibility to the max to suggest that the rear seats in the 911 are anything other than a token gesture.
Also it has to be asked, have you owned and /or driven a GTS MC-shift at length? Most Maserati owners on this thread appear to have given a fairly balanced and honest opinion of both cars, whereas yours just seem to be that of a Porsche fan-boy, and no other car in the world exists, no offence meant.

Gents, thanks for all the info and opinions I really appreciated, the reason I don't like the 911 is that it leaves me cold just driving it as a normal daily drivers car....u could be driving any car. And yes I have driven various 911's and still left me cold. the 911 is not a make u feel good car. I love the way the Masa give u a smile instantly u turn the ignition key and the looks of it.....
The car will be a third car so miles will be limited to about 5000.
Some people say go for the 360...I have been looking at that to...

If you ask me you have just answered your own question. If it's a third car for fun or special occasions it's got to make you feel good and give you the buzz, otherwise what's the point?

Now a 360 v's a GT is a whole new dilemma, one I've been pondering myself lately.

SJC, may I initially state I appreciate most Italian things. I have a beautiful Italian girlfriend who I see once in the week and at weekends. I love Italian food. And I love Italian cars. As well as German ones (Audis excluded). You will have seen from checking my forum posts no doubt that I have had 4 days of continuous use of a 2011 458 Italia over 1500 miles in July. A fantastic serious drivers car. Spoilt only by its width which restricted fast B road use in particular here in the North. This drawback resulted in my ordering the new 911 GT3, a car which no doubt you yourself covet as you have said already that you love the 911 hardcore variants.

I have also spent considerable time recently driving the following "proper" cars: Lamborghini Aventador, Mclaren MP 12c, Aston Martin Vanquish, Ferrari F12.

Yes, I have driven the GT MC at length. I have nothing against the car in principle as a GT. But do you not find the fuel consumption a bit tedious given the performance and weight? You mention the car gets attention as if that was a good reason for owning it! Is that the main reason you own it?I would agree that the targa 4 is not a true sports car if only because of its 4 wheel drive. Has to be 2 wheel drive. Regarding the rear seats on the GT v 911, yes there may be a touch more in the GT, although the longer wheelbase 991 will doubtless reduce the advantage. My 20 year old daughter regularly travels in the back of my GTS, and whilst there is restricted headroom she doesnt complain too much.

Not so.You will see from my forum posts, that I, not unlike yourself, have a fairly broad range of topic forums. In total contrast to other Maserati camp followers on this thread who have quite clearly had little experience of driving never mind owning 911s. And at least I have the 'b×××s' to post comments, unlike some members. Whilst on the subject of censoring words, there appear to be a considerable number also on your other forum postings. Are you going for the record?

You ask about the problems I had with a C4s cab tiptronic. You are correct in stating it had an engine rebuild in late 2009 the cost of which was covered entirely by the dealer. You may also have read on other postings that the initial cause of this can apparantly be easily remedied. In fact not unlike an electrical problem that afflicted a GT some time back discussed on PH.

Anyway, returning to the whole point of the discussion, you say your GT is the better choice for the OP, I say the 911 is. Perhaps the absence of true driving roads in the South means he could well be better off in the GT.
