It's easy to live with and is a good 2+2 family car, it's reliable and in sport mode is good fun and makes an awesome noise but it is a big car so spirited drives can be difficult on B roads.

But why is your wife saying get a 911 and your going for the Maserati???

Own Granturismo S and owned many 911's s incl 997.2. Very differnt cars. MGT is a GT, its best looking car on the rod fab interior makes noise to die or and turns heads everywhere. Inside Im 6'4" and my 6' son can sit behind me , boot big enough for week a away for 2-3 people.
911 to dive is very differnt more connected, more road noise, interior good but rear space good to nobody over 8 yrs old. Youll struggle to fit kids seats uness your very short upfront. Also a common sight these days
Depends what you want car for.
All in my humble opinion of course.

Cheers all for the reply's,
The wife likes the 911 because we have a dealer next door instate of 120 miles away. I'm not a real fan of the 911 and she knows people who had Porches they had noting than good things to tell about the cars. When I drove the 911 it did not make my hart jump up a notch but when I drove the Masa the hole driving experience was in a different league, nice interior, the noise and the looks....
The car will be only used for about +-5000 miles a year and we have no kids....maybe should be looking for something with 2 seats...
I still like to hear about the good at the bad..........

Guess it depends upon what sort of a car you really want but I have owned mine for 4 years and it is incredibly versatile and never fails to put a smile on my face. Harry etcalf of EVO fame reviewed the new GT Sport in this month's EVO and gives a very fair assessment, its worth reading if you are interested. Bottom line, I love mine and have had no real issues at wll with it, but if you are looking for a weekend weapon, as opposed to something you can use daily if you feel like it, I would look at something like a 430 or Gallardo.

Like you, the 911 just doesn't do it for me and whilst you cannot fault their ability, there is more to owning a car than simply getting round the corners as fast as you can, which means for me the Maser will win every time as I love the whole experience of owning it, not just the way it goes, which incidentally is very very well indeed. Hope this helps.

If you choose the RIGHT 911, this will give you the best true sports car experience. 991s have become a bit synthetic perhaps.

True, space in the rear is restricted but it is a small price to pay for the overall package.

I would suggest the 997 GT3, or if that's a bit hardcore for you how about the appreciating 2 wheel drive 997 GTS? A perfect balance between the C2s and Turbo.

The other true drivers car with room is of course the M3 which is currently really good value.

Go for a MCLine GTS - and you'll love it. Both you and your wife will have a great time! It can do the GT thing like very few other cars. There's always a sense of occasion when you apprach it. It makes 911's (996/997) almost boring.

Go test drive one.

You say theres always a sense of occasion when you apprach?? it? Does this disappear when you actually sit in and drive it? No GT car could compete with a 2+2 sports car having the breadth of ability shown by the 911. Dont just take my word for it. Didn't win best sports car accolade in last 50 years for nothing! (-;

I took a 911 out for a test and was very underwhelmed, the rear seats are almost nonexistent and they are all to common if you ask me. I went for the Quattroporte in the end due to the four doors been more practical with a toddler, otherwise it would have been the GT.

Doh!

Its a proper sports car so you are lucky to even have seats in the rear! That's the whole point!!!

And the GT is a proper GT, two different cars. I looked at the 911 as a daily driver with a toddler and it wouldn't have been much fun, and it was still underwhelming to drive and common as muck.

I think I can opine fairly, having owned a 996 Turbo, 997 GT3RS and Maserati GTS MC Sportline. The GTS is a GT - the GT3RS was a trackday car which was pretty awesome - but not as a GT. The 996 Turbo fits the bill as a fast GT, which you can hoon in comfort.

With regards to the sense of occasion - the Maserati wins every time - as you approach it, as you turn it on and as you hustle it on the roads - it's a big car with handling that belies it's size and weight - but you are always concious of it's size - but it handles very well (all things considered). Comparing the interior of the 996 turbo to the Maserati - no contest.

The 911 is a great car - but there are other choices out there.

Test drive both - it's a great chore that you'll just have to put up with!

If you think a 911 is underwhelming to drive, then you aint no driver. You are also in a miniscule minority. Sounds like you would be better off with a big wallowy saloon car. Perhaps a Peugeot or Vauxhall.......?

A pal of mine has a Gran T and has had nothing but trouble with it. Currently looking at 911s. Says it all really......
