How did you decide what supercar to purchase?
Discussion
Just looking at pictures of a 458 Spider made me grin. Driving one made me laugh out loud. Owning one makes me snigger in a manical, world domination kind of way. Muahahahahaha! Simple as that for me. Nothing else achieved that.
Setting off on my annual round Europe trip on Friday with a bunch of friends. It was great last year in my Porsche, it's gonna be chuffing epic in a spanking Fezza.
Just typing that has set me off again. How the f*ck did that happen? I'm off round Europe in my actual own brand new open top Ferrari. Holy st!
Haha, mental! It's like waking up each morning and realising you're married to Olivia Wilde.

I think most people build up to a supercar rather than just going out and buying one. I would have thought anyone that's been through the usual hot hatches, fast saloons, low end sports cars etc would have a pretty solid idea about which supercar was for them before then even drove any.
I learnt pretty early on that if it didn't feel special when you're just sitting in heavy traffic then it wasn't for me, which is why you wont find me with a 911 turbo or an R8.

I had never really had anything flash, but when I first saw the R8 I just wanted to own one. I bought one 18m old after it had taken a bit of a hit and loved every minute of the 2 years or so I had it.
I really like Gallardos, and the McLaren and might take the plunge one day but nothing at the moment makes me think A) I must have one and B) I can afford to lose a bit on that! Except maybe the FF.
I essentially bought with my heart and the timing was right. Looking forward to the next one.

You are where I was 2 years ago. I went for an R8 as it was a sensible supercar that didn't come across as being too flash. After a few months however I got bored and hankered for something with more flair.
Roll on 9 months I sold the R8 and bought a Lambo and I haven't looked back since.
Still enjoying it James?Roll on 9 months I sold the R8 and bought a Lambo and I haven't looked back since.
I'm trying to drive it as much as possible. Wilton House was good the other week, did a few runs up Gurston Down hill climb and the Supercar parade and all that.

Read this today on another forum: "There is Ferrari and then there is transportation" ~(and I think it is supposed to be the other way round)

Quite simply, if I'm spending £200k+ on a supercar, I have to feel that my life will not be complete without it. Various Ferraris have, over the years made me feel like this which is why I have bought them (currently running a 458 spider and a 599GTB). For my ten pence worth I'd say keep looking till you get that feeling. Supercars are bought with the heart not the head.

I just googled Olivia Wilde. Good choice, lovely cheekbones, but price-wise I rather suspect a different proposition to a sportscar or indeed supercar. Back on topic... Test drives are the way toward and each to their own, but having been here my 2p...
911 is a brilliant and reliable car that in standard guise can do most things. In RS or GT guise it is a track master and will outpace and outlast most ferraris and lambos. I say this having owned a number, but they do lack the supercar drama. It is a Teutonic approach to road domination. The Audi has always struck me as more of the same really; very capable/reliable, looks good, but still lacks the "silly italian factor". Perhaps it's just the Audi badge that does it, but the car hasn't lost all of the "solid" Audi DNA. All IMO of course.
I had very hardcore Porsches and I'm now on ferrari in 430 scuderia form. To be honest they all make me smile in their own way. I suspect I will keep changing because I love cars and I can. I sold my Lancia integrale Evo 1 this week; it ran well, made me smile and was a car I coveted from years ago. I still sold it and can now fill the space with something else. There will never be one perfect car for me, but I'll keep trying! I might never sell my caterham, but I need to get that running again!

Totally agree. It's the only way and a personal decision. Drove an R8 for 4 hours and didn't want to drive it again, but that's me, and I know others love them. All down to personal preference.NEFOC said:

All down to personal preference.Lots of good advice here. The only one I've test driven so far was the 911 turbo. Lots of fun but I didn't really fall in love with it. The R8 certainly isn't my first pick, but I just feel like the attention would be overwhelming with a 12c or gallardo. I'll probably test drive them both anyways, and possibly the 458 as well to see if I "fall in love" with any of them.
For any of you 12c, 458, or gallardo owners: how much attention do you grab as you drive? Does someone try to talk to you ever time you get out of your car in public?

Thanks, will do! Bit different to the one we did two weeks ago. 6 sub £200 cars, Leeds to John O Groats none stop. Me and a mate in our Suzuki Wagon R + won (cost £180) with a time of 17 hours 45 minutes. 1000 miles. That's an average of 57mph.Edited by MDahmen on Tuesday 19th August 18:42
:-)
I'm in a similar boat at the moment.
I've had an absolutely terrible year, but now i'm back up and running, I want something exciting.
I'm finding it hard to decide, still don't know, been considering the 12C, 458, maybe even an Aventador.
Unlike you I want something that's wow to look at as well as drive, the beauty and theatrics of a supercar make it what it is imo.
