I'm in a similar boat at the moment.

I've had an absolutely terrible year, but now i'm back up and running, I want something exciting.

I'm finding it hard to decide, still don't know, been considering the 12C, 458, maybe even an Aventador.

Unlike you I want something that's wow to look at as well as drive, the beauty and theatrics of a supercar make it what it is imo.
Oh I agree that beauty is a large consideration. I'm just a really shy person and don't like attention, yet I still want that "wow" factor (except I want it to be just for me...argh so frustrating!!!).

I've been looking for sometime at purchasing a supercar. I was originally looking at a McLaren 12C or something else in that bracket. I've since changed my mind because it's personally too flashy for me. Now I'm looking at maybe an R8 or a 911, but I find it impossible to choose. It's hard to think that I'll just hand over all that money (paying in cash) and can't go back to change my mind. So, how did you guys end up picking the car you did? Because ever time I compare two cars I find that they both have qualities that I want and don't want and basically equalize themselves out.

Also, is the R8 or 911, in your opinion, more practical for every day use?
worst "I've got loads of cash sitting around" thread ever!!....but seriously, if you buy right you won't lose your shirt. I got raped buying a v8 vantage new and then getting three half crowns for it 3 years later but looking around at the moment my current f430 is worth a bit more than I payed for it last year! sure the running costs are high but relatively with depreciation costs being almost negligible it's still "cheap" motoring if you follow my logic.

if you were to walk into a dealership with a suitcase full of money and then decided to swap out after a few months you aren't going to be too much out of pocket I think. and if you can pay upwards of 100k in cash for a car you can afford to lose a few grand on swapping and changing you tightwad!! ha!

12C in a dark colour is very subtle and won't draw the attention a red Ferrari or yellow Lambo will, yet I think they are currently the best looking Supercar and they are definitely the fastest. No shouty loud exhaust note either which will suit you well.

Regardless of what others say, Porsches and Audis are one rung down from proper Supercars, and you will always regret not going for one of the three, just as if you could afford a Zonda or CGT etc you would regret buying a safer option 12C etc

I think you have missed the whole point of a Supercar. Being the centre of attention is what they are. They should not be subtle. It should be something that grbs your attention the minute you see it, it should be rare and exclusive that makes people stare, and have brilliant handling and blow you mind away performance. If it is that bit impractical for ever day use that helps it score even more. If it is does not meet all of these criteria it is not a Supercar IMO. It does not stop it from being a brilliant car to own and drive but it is not a supercar.
The 911 Turbo is a brilliant car to own and drive but I would not really call it a Supecar but it is very, very close. Probably its practicality stops it from being a true supercar.
The R8 is not a Supercar as it fails on many accounts. It has an Audi badge so brand wise has the same image as a A1 diesel, It looks like a big TT to a lot of people who do not know cars, and to others it seems to say I wanted a supercar but could not afford it and bought this instead. It does have performance and handling and performance (unless it is a V8 that is no quicker than a TTRS) and it is impractical.
So as others have said if you want the performance, the brand image, praticality without the Supercar wow factor than a 911 Turbo is the route forward. But it is only you who can deside what you want but it does seem a true Supercar is not for you if you do not want to be noticed.

I agree totally. I bought a 12C and started off thinking that black would be right and not too showy but I trusted my heart and ended up with orange and absolutely love the colour on the car. It suits it, as does yellow.

R8 - it is an Audi and thats the issue with it. Why spend all that cash on an Audi when for a few £s more you can have a car with racing brand pedigree!
I love your sense of humour. But it might be too subtle for some.

What's your favourite WEC Audi? Mine's the original R8 of course. Lovely looking car and successful in sprints and also endurance.

My advice would be to buy a classic 'supercar' . If your budget is £200k you could pick up a Ferrari 512BB for instance. You won't attract the sort of 'attention' you would in any Lambo post 1991 for instance. And it will hold its money or appreciate over the next couple of years.

For me it was just pure lust. I seen it and wanted one, nothing else fired the rockets. AM Vanquish, ticked.

Look through some photos of supercars and buy the one that gives you a raging hardon.

If none of them do, get a caravan or house extension and stop dreaming and asking stupid questions about how to decide which car to buy.

These threads baffle me to some extent.

If you have the nous and wherewithal to amass the funds to drop this amount of cash on a toy, I'd expect you'd be single minded enough to know what you want to buy.

I know that opinions of strangers on the Internet would not have influenced any of my supercar purchases.

I knew what I wanted and bought it.

Simple as that.

In theory yes, in practice not so simple. I had a house (that could not be extended hehe) and about £35k or so for a supercar back in 2010. I may have had a "raging hard-on" for an F430 or Gallardo but didn't have the outright cash although I could have likely got finance for the rest. First you've got to decide whether you want to be in debt, and by how much for the supercar you want. For me, part of the pleasure of owning supercars is doing it debt free i.e. I owe nothing on them and at any point I can cash out/change up or down as I see fit smile

Somewhat off topic, but back in 2010, for £35k my options were:

328
348
355
Testarossa
456

How times have changed! I originally fancied a Testarossa but measuring the entrance to the car park where my space was put paid to that hehe

My 12c is black, no front plate, looks like the Batmobile with the doors open, however yellow is the best colour on a 12C by miles IMO, I just couldn't find the right car at the time!

Odd comment.

Personally I think a McLaren needs to be in a subtle, none look at me colour. I see it as more classy and sophisticated and therefore black, silver or volcano red is best.
I wouldn't want a yellow or orange one TBH

I'm with you! why ask anyone?, who cares? you know what you like so you buy it. There are going to be lovers and haters of every car out there, get what you want.

Not really an odd comment. If i am going to buy a super car, an important aspect is that it is different to other cars, it has some character, something about it. In my opinion (and that is all it is) any car made by Audi, BMW to any of the major OEMs may well win all the races but they don't have that X Factor. The smaller niche manufacturers have a racing history and smaller production runs of cars that look and feel different. The inside of an R8 is just a bigger TT from what I have seen.
