My mum , sister or gran would just walk straight past an r8 without even commenting on it, or probably even noticing it. I think thats part of the whole 'super car' thing.... people who couldn't care less about cars still realise that they're something special.
I bet they wouldn't comment on a 918 Porsche or a Veyron either...To people that don't know about cars - they would have no idea those were 10x the price of an R8...I bet they would think they were all the same price.

Tell a non-petrolhead you own "an Audi", and their opinion of you will go down, not up.
I agree with Gregf40 all the way on this one why do people think the badge is the deal breaker on this one excuse the pun but I think that is a load of bull.It is about how a car looks, goes and the reaction of other road users. Park that LFA up in any street and it would turn heads more than a wonderbra billboard. There is the fact that people will look thinking what is that there curiosity has already drawn them in.

The R8 still fails the "superbadge test".

Some of this thread has been genuinely puzzling for me. From reading so far, it seems more than a fair number of people buy cars primarily based on a) what badge it carries and b) ensuring said fancy badged car attracts a heap of attention.....Tell a non-petrolhead you own "an Audi", and their opinion of you will go down, not up.
when I would have thought people typically would look to buy cars in this price range primarily due to how fun those cars are to drive.
If anything I would be very glad if the 12c (black) attracted less attention than it seems to currently...

I have noticed a lot of PH'ers seem to like attention from schoolboys when I would have thought people typically would look to buy cars in this price range primarily due to how fun those cars are to drive.

LFA, GT40, XJ220 etc are out of reach of the average petrol head. A early R8 is within grasp of most enthusiasts which imo is one of the things a supercar shouldn't be by definition. Same as the GTR and similar.
The cheapest R8s on the market are around £40k and have stopped depreciating. Assuming you are only really counting the V10 as a "Supercar" then the starting price is a solid £60k. Thats more than a 360 Modena or about the same as a Gallardo. The GTR is harder to quantify as IMO it perhaps lacks some key ingredients that would define Supercar for me, 4 seats, only 6 cylinders and a prosaic image.

Different versions of the R8, the entry level available 2nd hand at £40k is one of the reasons why a lot of people don't see it as a supercar. A V10 at £60k will be far newer than the equivalent G or 360. It's not just the purchase price, running costs on the R8 are cheaper also which attract a different market. The GTR is harder to quantify as IMO it perhaps lacks some key ingredients that would define Supercar for me, 4 seats, only 6 cylinders and a prosaic image.
