It's really quite simple.
My new take on it
Super Sports car class 100k to 250k ish
Super cars >250k
Hyper cars >£600k
you cannot have cheap super cars, the games moved on, Super Sports is a great name and sector.
ie 991Turbo S, the new mini SLS, R8 V10, mini Lambo's all now Super Sports.
now all the big boys have Hyper cars, not many cars fall into the "SUPER CAR" sector now
Aventador is a nice example 458 special border line and still super sports maybe but the F12 is a Super car.
So I am going back on my view and now saying NO the R8 v10 is not a super car, we have a new sector.
seems to work quite well imo.

Actually it is because I want to join the SCD club when I do move, which requires you own a "supercar" (hence its name) to partake.Despite the fact we all know it isn't

Hence why I could never own an Aventador for example.It seems the majority on here that argue it not being a supercar either have Lambos or Ferraris maybe they think that there are very few cars worthy of being thought of in the same breath regardless of the badge.I love both makes of car and everybody is entitled to there opinion but to dismiss a car because of a badge is snobbery of the highest order.
A supercar is not determined by the badge on the front of the bonnet. Although I see some of you wish it was!
What other cars exists in the same manufacturers range also is not a factor- otherwise you could potentially exclude the 458 on the basis of Ferrari making the California and 612 which despite their exclusivity are not really super cars.
It's determined by performance (both 0-60, 0-100 and top speed), styling, price- as a new car as it still has to be relatively exclusive in my opinion.
The GTR I would not class as a super car at all, but the 997/991 Turbo S I would as they have the scary hanging on for dear life acceleration that only a handful of cars can come close to (PDK 0-60 of 2.9 seconds using launch control 0-100 6.7 seconds top speed 198.4 mph+), and were also £130,000 as new cars putting them in a different bracket.
The V10 R8 is a super car all day long. It's got the speed, looks, screaming V10, 2 seater, price tag, and also has the desirability factor.
The argument that it doesn't excite people enough is also rubbish- it attracts a lot of attention weather parked up or on the road. In fact (colour dependent) people often react to it just as much as a Gallardo in my experience.

The Wikipedia definition works well for me. It's taken from a book written in 2006, before the R8.
The definition is always dependant on the era. The higher spec R8 probably makes it, but the true arbiters of the super car domain are the authors of these books. So wait for the next publication with "Supercars" in the title and you'll find the definitive judgement about the R8.

I saw and heard a V10 yesterday - it is a supercar. All this badge and brand snobbery is ridiculous. Too many people here stake the claim that it has to be Italian and a 2 seater to qualify. Which frankly is preposterous. If I take out the rear seats of my QP does it become a supercar?

1. If you have a Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini then there is no way that an (Audi) R8 can be a supercar.
2. If you have a car other than one of the above then the R8 is a supercar (at least in V10 guise).
