Incredible. I love how the whole back end comes out as a module. I wonder if that inspired the Audi R8? That ability to service the rear end is one aspect of the car which is credited for its success in endurance racing.

Back in the 90's I was a gopher for a Formula Opel team contesting the Opel Euroseries. One of the best memories I have, is of the West Race team turning up at the Nurburgring with their F1 race cars. The noise they made was incredible. Real hair on the back of your neck stuff. They were simply fantastic race cars.

Funnily enough the first time I saw an F1 GTR in action was at Donington Park for the 1995 BPR GT Championship. As an 11 year old lad bred on Oulton Park club racing, the sound of John Nielsen howling down the pit straight in the West F1 GTR gave me goosebumps. All these years later I can still recall it like it was yesterday. I think Nielsen won the race that day if my memory hasn't played tricks. Absolute magic.

Come to think of it, the FOpel Euroseries supported BPR from time-to-time I think? Or maybe DTM / ITC. Must check my programme archive for confirmation.

Initially we were part of the Formula One program, then we swapped to support the DTM. One of our drivers was Jan Magnussen and he went into the DTM with Mercedes. Our other drivers were Richard Westbrook and Jason Watt, who went on to win the series.

Apologies if too personal but TT, what's the cost of the work - is there a normal supercar service cost and an F1 cost?!

I ask this as a genuine petrolhead intrigue rather just a nosey money question.

It's a great question, and guaranteed to get a 'fk me' response to the answer.

A quick google quotes Lazante stating 100 hours labour and 4k for the fuel bag. (2008)

"So, Mr TT, is it a deal if I throw in mats, mud-flaps, six months tax and half a tank of fuel?"

"Make it a full tank of fuel and I'll take it..."

hehe

Any pics of the new sports exhaust?

Is it just the pipes or the whole back box?

I seem to recall that the original back box was made of inconel and huge but formed part of the rear crash structure of the car. There was a pic of a totalled F1 which crashed in Germany years ago and the rear end slammed into the central barrier. Complete mess but it seemed to do its job.

I will post some pictures when I get them. The latest sports exhaust is titanium. IIRC it weighs around a quarter of the original. I belive it still forms part of the crash structure.

Here's a pic of the original exhaust

Do the vanos units need replacing after a certain mileage or are they better built than the e36 bmw ones? I know Jay Leno replaced his.

You often here people talk about how the F1 engine has no flywheel. That toothed ring behind the clutch certainly looks like a flywheel to me. A small one for sure but a flywheel nonetheless.

I've seen a few gtr's on track in the early 2000's, they annihilated everything there

wonder how competitive they'd be against current supercars

I'd also be interested to know the answer to this.

fk me gently, fantastic pic's, very interesting to see the oily bit's of such a great machine.
I've seen various design and car assembly pic's of F1's but this is mucho greato.

Does the new exhaust claim any power or torque advantages or is it mainly a weight saving benefit? I know things are constantly advancing but I can't imagine the standard unit was allowed to restrict the V12 to any significant degree?
