5% VAT is payable under importation of a classic car over 25 years old, with the flat fee of £50 duty payable in addition on entry to the UK.
Your appointed agent should automatically use the correct tariff code when presenting to customs, but I always like to double check , as reclaiming overpaid vat takes months.

01702 366077 classification line phone number.
The commodity code used for a classic over 25 yrs old is 9705000090
If you have a car under 25 years old then the agent will normally declare the vehicle ( Ferrari or other EU made car) as such and claim the £50 flat rate duty charge by providing the VIN number which shows where the car was made. This is normally enough, but I have had one agent ask me to obtain a letter from Ferrari as to where the car was made. I simply switched to a different agent for importation, as the one I normally use ( Imorex) have been doing this for over 25 years , and have never needed anything more than the VIN to clear such cars.
Hope this helps.

Wow, maybe we should start asking owners to do some of the work too!
