Agree with all the sentiments from all on this, I would love to last around Italy, or where I currently amI..Innsbruck but forfeits that intolerable drive to get there. I driven many times mainly coaches down to Italy and I just cannot face sitting in my 360 or Boxster for that amount of time. So is it not best to fly down and hire a car such as MX 5 Boxster or Ferrari once there , Mike

Track day I'd often take the vx220,euro jaunt excluding the ring???? fk that, R8 every time!! Why would I want to rattle around in a tinny two seater sports car around Europe? Rather be at home boning the Mrs, although that's probably unlikely unless it was well planned and she was pissed.

Try boning someone else's Mrs, now that's definitely more fun than an MX5 biggrin

slickhillsy---absolutely no sense of humour failure here , otherwise I would'nt have risen to your smiley---you DID see my smiley too, didn't you?smile

and the whole point of starting this thread , and putting it in the supercar section rather than the mx5 section, rather has the suggestion of mischievous humour doesn't it ?

I don't think anyone is going to take their bullock-cart rather than their Bugatti (or vice-versa) on a trip, just because you or I hold a particular opinion, but hey, its fun talking about it with all this snow around

but as I have a little free time on my hands just now , let's really put the wolf amongst the pheasants (no , honestly, I did deliberately mean to put that 'h' in ):

don't you think that it would be absolutely hilarious to prick that little balloon of self satisfied snobbery that is occasionally so glaring in the supercar section of PH----and don't you think that this thread is the perfect vehicle for doing so ?

while I can understand someone saying that they would prefer having a supercar rather than an mx5 (I should actually be more specific and say that the mx5 that I really adore is the pre 1994 1.6 series 1 car ), why have there been so few posters , relatively speaking, that have actually stated the glaringly obvious (quoted from another thread):

'' sometimes when reading PH , one gets the impression that you have to constantly drive a car to enjoy it ---well, what I would say is that its quality time and mileage with your car that counts---what's the fun sitting in a traffic jam or at 70 mph on the motorway''

a case to illustrate the point : I hit the stelvio pass at about 9 am (bad planning) last june ,and with all that traffic around , I was grateful that I was in my mx5---anything faster would have been even more frustrating----in fact a push-bike would have been best

anyway, I really enjoy reading and being on PH, and this is all meant to be simple(!!) good humoured fun---so no offence being directed at anyone ---just curious----and am perfectly happy to take onboard the very clear democratic vote expressed here (esp the point about safety) biggrin

In the spirit of this, I probably get more 'pure' driving enjoyment out of my (modified) R53 JCW, than I do my 550 Maranello - the size, chuckability etc. I've done Euro trips in both, and whilst the Ferrari is more of an occasion, the Mini is just so much fun. Which I imagine an MX5 to be (but slower than my Mini biggrin)

Currently going through this dilemma myself. Hit 40 this year and planning a driving trip round Europe. London - Paris - Millau Bridge - Nice - Monaco - Pisa - Maranello - Geneva - London.

Taking the wife, and 2 kids. Do I do it in the Ferrari or the Cayenne Turbo... Cayenne would give more space for sure, but the whole way I would regret leaving the Ferrari at home..

Leaning towards the Ferrari!

You will regret leaving the Ferrari at home. I did the trip to Portugal in ML and was constantly thinking I need to come back here for the roads etc in a different car! Even a Cayenne Turbo, despite being quick and comfortable, is just another SUV. If you have a Ferrari and can fit the kids - take it. Just one more selfish point to remember - you will be comfortable its the others who won't be and keep reminding them whose driving!! wink

Clearly in that situation the wife needs to drive the Cayenne with the kids in as a support vehicle while you go on ahead in the Ferrari and scout the best route.

A family road trip sounds like my idea of hell hehe imo a euro road trip should be done with a like-minded mate with a couple of cold beers thrown in

Drive the Ferrari down, put the wife and kids on the plane and meet them there.

Likewise, a family road trip like that doesn't sound particularly fun. I'd far rather drive down and fly everyone else. Maybe taking one of the kids in the ferrari/lambo/similar if they were old enough to actually enjoy it.

I'm out in Portugal and I have a Cayenne and a Gallardo. I don't think there is particularly any fun to be had with a Cayenne out here. I'd far rather fly Easyjet then rent a Clio than drive all the way here in a Cayenne. Or obviously drive in the 'real' sports car. Driving everyone down in a cayenne just seems the worst of all worlds really

Cheers for the comments guys. Luckily my family share my interest in cars and road trips. In 2013 We drove the Cayenne to the Highlands and drove on some truely spectacular roads. Driving fast round the lochs were great but the best was hammering it through the valleys in Glencoe. It was perfect. Mountains, valleys, grey clouds about to let loose. Honestly when i saw the same road on Top Gear it looked the sameeven with all their camera trickery!

Last year we did Snowdonia in the Cayenne, and that was pretty awesome too. This year looks set to be Europe and Factory tours.

Some stats for those who may be interested.

Stage Duration Distance 456M Cost Cayenne Cost
London to Geneva 09:30 625 £219 £131
Geneva to Maranello 05:09 314 £110 £66
Stay in Maranello
Maranello to Pisa 02:15 130 £46 £27
Pisa to Monaco 03:43 209 £73 £44
Monaco to Nice 00:26 13 £5 £3
Nice to Millau Bridge 03:59 264 £92 £55
Millau Bridge to Paris 05:42 403 £141 £85
Paris to London 05:13 296 £104 £62

Total 2254 £789 £473 -£316

Dont ask me why I worked out the cost... I was getting bored at work!

I've had huge fun touring in Europe in supercars. Car parks in French cities are a bit of a nightmare and you do have to stay in decent hotels with private garages but for me it would be insane to own one of these things and then leave it at home on a trip like that. If you're in a Lamborghini you'll only have room for one pair of pants and a toothbrush but you can always buy stuff when you're out there.

I remember one particularly memorable journey in an Austrian tunnel accompanied by a local lad in his Subaru! Stuff like that takes some beating.

There's always the option of having the Ferrari delivered to one of your stops enroute so you get some family roadtrip time and then a bit of Ferrari time as well. Win-win!
I did that recently when a planned holiday had to be shortened and with some spectacular last minute service from Alex at Lizard logistics managed to salvage a potential holiday cluster fk and get some quality time with my Scuderia.
