I don't think it's weird. It's human nature and it's funny.

Last summer I was in central London and next to a 458 Spider in traffic. I was in my diesel X5, my window down. The middle aged chap in his 458 who clearly liked his burgers and had a very iffy taste in sunglasses had his roof was down.

I made the mistake of looking at his car and not immediately telling him what a fab motor it was. I personally thought his spec made his car look like Coco the Clown. It was a bloody mess. I must have shown it on my face although I didn't say anything. And my obvious lack of outward interest in those few seconds clearly pissed him right off.

He looked up and said "you'll never fking own one mate". And with that he gunned his motor and sped off covering 30 feet in traffic. I drew alongside again, couldn't be bothered to say anything and just grinned at him.

Sorry, some supercar owners are complete knobs.

To be fair, if I wasn't old and fat I wouldn't need a Ferrari - I could get girls the conventional way! wink

Can't help but think there's a certain amount of paranoia with some that own these cars.

Hi, Good to meet you the other week and thanks for the coffee again, you must have been sorely tempted to say something to him smile

And that is why I am generally reluctant to meet new people when I am out in my "special" car. When I am driving that, I tend to hang out with my friends and that's it. That prevents me from meeting people I would rather not, like that woman.

I'm sure it is highlighted with supercars but in all honesty it seems the world is full of people who are either jealous and begrudge others what they have or just don't have any respect for people or there property.

When the kids were young we took them to many car shows but always made them aware that they should not touch and to be careful as they walked around. Accidents do happen and kids will be kids but I am shocked to see the reaction of parents these days.

It doesn't matter what I am driving or what I park next to, I always try to treat things with respect, even if something is old or battered I would not want to further the damage.

As for what someone drives or how they look, even if its not to my taste I don't think I would be rude - however depending on there behaviour that might change.

Love the "white lightning" in post above!

I love this biggrin Just wonderful.

It would be lovely if one day you're next to him again and he's just sat there with his tongue hanging out and his eyeballs on his cheeks biggrin

Well if we (supercar owners) are too fat then its a good job supercar manufactures dont restrict their cars as to who can drive them rather like fashion house designers who will only go to a certain size!!

I think people should make a effort. Why own a work of art and completely spoil the tight lines? It's good for overall health and well being as well so a win win all round.

The only negative comment I've had in 18 months came from a middle aged bloke filling up his Impreza at a petrol station who muttered something along the lines of 'Daddy's car' as I got out of the 360. I generally find it's best to ignore such folk, not worth the effort.

On the subject of Oulton last week, whilst quite a few of the kids clearly showed respect for the cars by not touching them, I witnessed a lot of kids touching or rubbing against cars whilst walking by. I even saw one child bouncing a football whilst surrounded by Supercars and the parents didn't say a thing. Who the hell thought that was a good idea?

Slightly off topic, say if you were overweight and went on a track would that cause issues with handling??

Also agree that it would be rude to be a few lbs over weight when the manufacturer spends £ 000,s trying to keep weight down.

This is magnified even further when riding superbikes. It cracks me up when I hear a fat biker waxing lyrical about the new weight saving titanium or carbon piece he's just splashed out on.

I know I am fortunate to have inherited an amount of wealth which in turn has enabled me to own some very nice cars, at a young enough age in which I can enjoy them.
But I also know that many people work hard and save up all their lives to own their dream. Unfortunately this occurs when they are a bit old, grey haired, beer belly and 'aged'.

An old, bald, podgey, grey haired bloke in a tight, modern, slick supercar just doesn't seem to match for most people's image of who 'should' drive them.
I don't think any supercar advertisement would show such an image in their glossy mags wink

To be fair, if any of you have been to Monaco and seen the types that try to show off and compete with each other in 'posing', it is cringe worthy to see a 'well past it' bloke driving a bright yellow F458 convertible with the music on loud pretending to be 18 years old.

It may be jealousy that people display but I think it may be more that the image of owners in reality does not match the image shown in media adverts.

I know when I get grey and old there will not be a sports/supercar near my garage, I don't want to become something that I cringe at. wink
(well maybe a black AM Vantage - so I can pretend to be 007 - he's looking a bit 'aged' in the latest movies isn't he?)

so you'd restrict your joy of ownership lest you give the wrong impression to people who frankly don't matter?

strange choice

Each to their own as they say.
But I guess I am a little image conscious. (Even though I do feel conscious of driving a super car given that many others are having trouble paying their daily living bills - maybe this comes due to the fact that the majority of my wealth was inherited rather than generated 100% by myself - it always plays on my mind).

Fair play to you for admitting the source of your wealth.

I do think however, this goes along with your lack of insight into those of us who have had to make it all ourselves. Lots of self-made people are very driven, and when they achieve certain financial goals want to reward themselves by possibly fulfilling a childhood dream.

Who cares if they are older by the time they can afford it?

Who says you reach an expiry date after which its no longer acceptable to be seen in something like a supercar?

I think having (as you admit yourself) had everything handed to you on a plate means your opinion is somewhat skewed here.

It probably is skewed I won't deny that at all (even though I am still a hard working and driven individual). But I'm just trying to give an answer to the original question... maybe its the image mismatch that gripes certain people and supercars?
And like I say its each to their own, for me I am a bit image conscious, but for others if they are not worried about the views of others then 'go for it' as many seemingly do.

Why?

If the part is lighter, its lighter, regardless of his weight!!

What about a 6'6" bike rider who will never be below 14/15 stone, should he not bother with any weight saving parts either!?

Just for the record, I'm 16 stone & should be 6'10" however I'm only 5'11" wink
