Hi Guys, I've been on a motorbike for 3 years now (ride a Harley Nightrod Special) and want to make the transition to my first supercar, have been in love with the Gallardo for a while but I'm really open to opinion.

Few issues; i've only had a car license since Jan 2014 and the insurance is looking pretty stupid (im over 30 though not that it helps)

I'm able to spend up to 80k£ for the privilege of going all in + insurance. Alternatively I could get something else to build up my no claims and would be a great thrill in the interim an old porsche maybe? I even looked at the Aston N430 and Maserati MC Stradale. I'm cool with all sorts of packages finance or straight cash, just not sure how to find the best deal or options.

Would you guys be able to offer any thoughts, I'm so keen to just do something i'm driving myself nuts looking at all these cars and options, its a bit of a buzz smile

Thanks

Is there an existing thread on this sort of stuff already?

Your insurance is going to be ridiculous on a supercar I'm afraid

agree, little i can do there.

is there a decent halfway house or starter car that would make sense for like 2 years?

I would be tempted to go for something like a Golf GTI obviously won't be anything like a supercar but you can still have some great fun in them and the insurance won't be eye watering and you will get your no claims up so after three years or so you will see a huge difference in insurance

It will depend on your anticipated mileage. Why not get some quotes?

For a cheaper alternative, how about a Caterham or Elise?

Sure that'd be great, i think the insurance will be expensive for me for a while regardless so i dont want it to stop me dreaming as it were.

I looked at the GTI at 20-25k£ and around £1,500 on a comprehensive was not a bad option, just didn't really do enough to get me off the Harley.

Any reason why you can't have both?

Good point, that would work just fine as well.

I thought of an old carerra with an all in spend of 20-25£k.

But your right I'd like to keep both bike and car.

Lotus Esprit or Porsche 968 Clubsport with classic limited miles insurance.

On a carerra could I get one for 23k£ or so what's the best model? I'm sure my insurance will be sub 3k£.

Noble M12? Pretty much supercar performance for under half your budget.

caterham insurance was always reasonable given how quick the cars can be

Porsche Cayman, large range of choice price and performance-wise.

Screw the insurance problem. You've only been driving a year and you want to climb in a 500+ bhp supercar?

What are you driving now?

Nothing car wise, just a muscle bike. Insurance will cost a bit regardless from the quotes I have and different configurations, so I'm tempted to look for an old Porsche carrera S or an M3 (I might be too old for those now judging from my neighborhood)
