Given the choice of a one owner 4.2 with circa 15k miles or a 3 owner 4.7 MC shift with 45k miles which would people opt for?

The cars are very similar in price, they both have full maserati service history. The one owner 4.2 has been serviced by the supplying dealer throughout.

Different cars, different beasts, different needs! Either way the MC Shift is the one!! Go test drive both and it will be a no brainer....

Disagree. Two people, two different answers.

Go drive and decide for yourself. Bear in mind you can get a 4.7 auto too.

That's the beauty of a forum - different people have different views..my comparison was between a 4.2 and a 4.7 MC Shift as per the OPs query and I doubt anyone in their right mind would recommend the 4.2 over an MC shift!

Not dismissive - just an observation. Don't take offence as none was intended!

How important is performance to you?

The 4.2 is pretty tepid at best, not a very quick car. The 4.7 is notably better from what people say, though I've not tried it myself. For me it'd have to be the 4.7 but maybe you aren't too bothered by performance.

Just buy it from the main dealer to have the full proper warranty and make sure any niggles will be sorted hassle free. That way you don't have to worry much about extra mileage.

FYI - The independents mentioned on the OP's other thread also provide 12 months rock solid warranties with their cars.

Does that include ADG? I've read some mixed reviews

Dicky Grace and Nuvola - tbh you are on the wrong forums if you want to talk about Maserati's get on to Sportsmaserati.co.uk as that is where these cars are well known and discussed at length.

Fair enough I'm sure they are good to be well vouched for.

Personally though I've just been burned once or twice in the past from independents so always buy from main dealers now. Has certainly paid for itself in the past with a few major issues sorted out free of charge. But this is a debate which could go on forevermore! Bit of a personal preference really.

Fair enough mate. I have bought various car's from both Independents and Main Dealers but have had more issues with service from the main dealers. In my opinion as the independents are mostly run as a business by the owner they are usually very customer focused and even more so on specialist high end brands such as Maserati and Porsche etc. Whereas the main dealer is as good as your salesman or man behind the desk get's! smile

Iam on my second GT.

There are some excellent people on here who will give you sound advice on the difference, listen but then take them both out and draw your own conclusions

Let us know your thoughts ...

Two replies I thought saying the opposite of each other.

Truely there is no substitute for driving yourself as personally I severely dislike the MC shift and love the auto on the 4.7 as it offers far more manual control than on the 4.2. That said it all depends what you want and what you are coming from. The 4.2 is not slow if you are coming from an entry level XK but it is if you are coming from an XKR and if you only intend to drive it in auto then the lack of control with the 4.2 will not matter.

If it helps I've also owned a load of S4s over the years and the 4.2 is similar in performance. Also the MC gearbox is similar to SMG and R Tronic so if you have driven those gearboxes then you have an idea what to expect. I thought that the old M5 was a bag of spanners, hence my view but invest the time in driving to make sure that you do not buy the wrong car.

+ 1 to all of the above.

I got in to a 4.7 GT-S Auto after a Jag XKR. I drove the 4.2 first and thought the Jag was more involving and certainly quicker so went for the 4.7 which was great.

As EC2 mentions, I also thought the box on the MC Shift was not great for me and went for the Auto which was fantastic. In SPORT mode, the exhaust note is seriously amusing.

Go drive both and see which one you prefer

I have a 4.7 MC shift and the gearbox is one of my favourite parts of the car, I absolutely love it but I do very little town driving.
I have never driven a 4.2 so I cannot comment on the performance difference.

+1 I hate being stuck in traffic in the MCshift so if your commute includes a lot of traffic I'd certainly go for the autobox.

I went to see the 4.7 MC shift today. Disappointed to say the least.

Car has had some very bad paint repair. Terrible smell in the car which reminded me of an old oily garage.

The interior was in good condition but was very grubby - a decent valet would get it back to former glory without too much effort.

I liked the gearbox - very positive action and felt right for the car.

The steering was very light yet nervous feeling - a bit like when you have a boot full of heavy stuff and it feels a little like you are a passenger not a driver - it had skyhook suspension; could this be the reason? The suspension felt very firm in sport mode and definitely too harsh to drive my kids around in.

I was surprised by the lack of headroom - I am a smidgen over 6ft but even with the seat on it lowest setting I had to sit with my head tilted as my right hand side was touching the roof lining (maybe I need a haircut lol).

I was also a bit disappointed by the overall experience, it wasn't as exciting as I was hoping for; maybe even feeling a little bland. The exhaust droned at motorway speed whether or not I had Sport mode selected. The exhaust didn't sound that loud on the B roads. The start up sound though - probably the best I've heard from ANY CAR.

The car was black and I think that was part of the problem - just a bit dull for my eyes.

So have I experienced a bad car or is this what to expect - especially with regards to the steering and suspension.
I will keep my eyes open for another because I love the look and it has been on my wish list for a while!

Interesting to hear your thoughts.

It kind of sounds like you are looking for a more exciting drivers car? The Maserati has a brand people love, looks the part (except for the horribly dated rear lights), and has a great soundtrack - as you noted with the start up.

I'm afraid it's a really difficult market segment, most cars in this segment (M6, Aston DB9, etc) try hard to deliver a comfy GT and a fun sports car in one package, but end up with a product that is compromised in both areas. I ended up buying a new M6 a couple of years ago - 4.4 V8 Convertible - and regretted it. Too uncomfortable and unrefined to be a good GT car and too heavy and no steering feel to be a good sports car. The M6 Coupe (the 4.4V8) is supposed to be better... maybe worth a look if in budget, maybe. Otherwise I really liked the facelift Jag XK-R convertible. Roof down you can really enjoy that V8 noise.

Of course just move more down the sports end of the spectrum and go for a 911 of some variant, that will deliver the sports car side of things though obviously is a compromised GT car. But at least it excels at something.
