Started looking at Maserati Cambiocorsas and was pleasantly surprised at what a bargain they seem (it looks like £15k buys you a nice one). Is there a catch though? I'm guessing upkeep isn't cheap and that's why?

Some confusion over the naming of these cars. Typically they are referred to as a 4200, and most have cambiocorsa as you suggest. The manuals are known as 4200GT.

They are definitely good value - but go through clutches quite regularly (2-3k job), how long they last depends on your driving style, anything from 20-50k.

So are clutches an issue on the semi autos too? And if it is, is the change a specialist only job?

Clutches are an issue on the semi auto, can be very easy to go through a clutch if not treated properly. In contrast the full manual is much better as there is far greater control, but as with all such matters so much depends on how they are treated. I had a proper manual and loved it, really great cars and yes very good value if they have been looked after. if not, be prepared for some big bills!

The semi-automatic clutch system is the same as the Ferrari F1. If the clutch is installed/set up properly and driven considerately (i.e. go easy on the launches) they'll last a long time. Getting 40k miles out of a clutch is easily done in these circumstances.

The clutch change for these systems should be done by someone who knows how and has the equipment and experience to set up the control unit. Additionally, the 4200 (and GS) needs the clutch balancing on the engine. Not many independents have the experience and/or equipment to do this - failure to do so can result in out of balance forces causing vibrations or engine warning lights.

Finally, I would recommend getting an inspection done by someone experienced with these cars prior to purchase. They can hide some serious bills - I was working on a GS this weekend that looked great on first glance but once it was up on the lift it was a sorry sight underneath.

What people have said - the clutch can be fragile if not properly driven so set off gently and don't gas it up in first.

Mine has read 25% and 26% worn for the last 2 services, it was pretty new when I got the car 8000 miles ago. Just think of it as being about 10p/mile on the running costs, so less than the tyres. I'm just killing the fronts that went on when I got the car, so about 8k fronts and 5-6k rears depending on driving style. That's another 16p/mile. Fuel economy cn be 20mph on a run, but generally consider 15-18, so that's 30p/mile.

Budget a grand a year for service and repairs and you won't be far off, so if you do 4000 miles per year you're looking at 25p/mile. I've been using Carrs main dealer as they are 5 miles away and on the same industrial estate as the local tip, so I fill it with garden waste and they hoover it out with the service. I could save a bit going to an indy, but then I'd have to take a day off work to get it there and collect it, and drive 100 miles to do it.

Add in tax, insurance, MOT, and I reckon at 4000 miles a year it costs a pound per mile.

Glad I don't use it for my 90 mile round trip to work!

Thanks guys, good to know. It would only be a weekend/occasional car anyway so that sounds quite reasonable. The wife is fawning over one smile

Hi

Had my 4200 six months now, my clutch doesn't feel the best but I know it's still got life left in it yet.

Mine is now only used as a day off / occasional car. Awesome machine that is great as a gentle cruiser and also will take to the country roads, mine cost me 13.5k which on reflection really is a bit of a bargain, they do share similar traits to a Ferrari, I considered it my 'entry' into proper prestige..

Can't see me parting with it any time soon.
