Everyday 'Supercar' for 15-20k - is it viable?

You don't state what your running costs budget is.
For me either the Maser 4200 or Cerbera would be top of the list though the 911 is the best in terms of useable daily driver.
Trouble is both have the easy capacity to bankrupt you in one service. Speak to owners and service indies to get a flavour of running costs and also intervals - a daily driver you do 12k pa in that needs servicing every 6k will soon add up as will sub 20mpg. For example my TVR, whilst not a supercar is pretty comparable I'd say in terms of running costs at approx. 2-3k per annum.
At your end of the budget scale just make sure you do lots of homework, nothing worse than having a very pretty driveway ornament you can't afford to run.

Yes, I'm biased, but they're definitely everyday usable with remarkably low maintenance/servicing costs.

Edit: Balls - you said "pre 2006". Is that because of the VED? £500 a year is a bit painful, but the servicing costs on these are so realistic that overall the costs might be no higher than something like the Maser.

I went from an XJ-S V12 to a Camaro. I love Jags. But if you are claiming the T/A isn't worthy, what exactly is supercar about an XKR?

Neighbour has just bought one after staring at our GS for 12 months but decided he needed something easier for transporting his parents. He's had Mercs and beemers before and says he loves it. A little more quirky than the Merc, but feels just so much more special and drives surprisingly well. But be aware, these things are *HEOWGE*. They dwarf a V70 or S-class. £20k should get nice 35,000 miler and look for an 06 plate for the lower VED (every little helps).

I think the word Supercar in the title is a bit of a red herring. There have been some great, interesting and 'super' cars in the thread but with the exception of the Mondial (by virtue of the marque), no 'Supercars'. Pretty much all of the cars mentioned would put a smile on my face although if it was my money, the search would start and finish with a 911.

Remember though that the definition of "supercar" is not set in stone. To each and every person it can and will mean different things.

The offered car is not everyones cup of tea, but it is a bit different.

If the OP had asked for "a cheap runabout to leave at the station, good MPG and easy to fix" then the attacks might be deserved... but he didn't. Don't like his suggestion? Ignore post and move on.

Pretty speedy stock. But easy to get to 420-440hp without any engine work. Or 500+hp with engine work or 600-650hp with a supercharger.

4 seats.
Manual or auto.
Should be fine for daily duties.

to the OP, if you are ever in the North London area you are more than welcome to take the Cerb for a spin. I also have full excel spreadsheets of all the costs of my 911, Cerb, Tuscan, Ferrari etc so that you can get a flavour of running costs.

Thanks for the offer PGN - I now realise I need to do a LOT more research and test driving to make a choice. I'm terrible for buying the first car I look at because it's there and then get itchy feet after 7-8months.

I'm fully aware that these cars cost more to run, service etc, but only doing 6-8k pa makes it more viable for me. I've had 48 cars in 25 years of driving, some have been fun, some have been dull and boring or 'needed' to do a job. I'm now approaching 42, the kids are young teenagers and I want something that looks and sounds good and is a bit different. Too many people around our area are more hung up on having the newest number plate or 'must have' car than something they actually want - I do not want to conform and plan to wake them every morning with my V8 rumble!!

I know the 911 is a brilliant car, it's just not a car I have ever really desired so not sure it will feel 'special' to me whereas there is something a bit hmmm about saying yo u drive a Maserati, likewise a TVR Cebera is a 4 seat hooligan that you know will never be made again.

And please be gentle on 300 - I love American motors, and his left field suggestions, the LHD thing doesn't work for me but I like his options. Likewise some consider my shortlist not to be true super cars, but they are to me, a Ferrari, lambo etc are a step above though.

The Mondial really doesn't help does it!!! If I just stretch the budget a bit more.........

The 928 is definitely a Supercar. Even Clarkson classed it as such. The fact it's better all round than my 308 and Mondial is just a happy bonus
