Was there this much fuss about the 2005 GT? I can't remember there being anything like it back then
You're right but I think this is linked with cars more broadly becoming "cool" and the latest thing for people who has everything to pump their money in to. You could also just rock up and buy 996/997 GT3's (not that I did as I was too young but I remember well) also on a similar tangent I read some style websites and GQ etc which never used to feature cars but now they do, heavily. Throw all of this in with the social media/youtube aspect which another person mentioned and it is a pretty big explosion in the interest in cars.patch5674 said:

i've seen it happen in all sorts of things, was banksy prints when i was at uni, BTL houses, wine, sneakers, new build property contracts, etc.
people have hobby
something in that hobby makes them a few bob
everyone else piles in and buys all manner of crap (F348)
hobby not so fun anymore
smart money leaves
everyone else get burnt
the only reason people are so fking excited about this car is because you can sell the fker for profit.

Its all about making money on your car now not driving them, this being a forums for car enthusiasts it has seen many threads on values and 'investment' topics. These beautiful cars were engineered for driving not being stored and collected, sold on for profit. It should be a happy accident when you come to sell to try something new that you could make money, but I would hope first you actually used the car.

There is a big issue here, in that it's very unlikely that Ford are going to replace the new GT within the next 10yrs. I know there's nothing in the Ford Performance plan for the next 6 including any dev work at all. So whereas flippers may be blacklisted by McLaren, Porsche, Ferrari et al so they won't get on the next list for whatever, what's the incentive for someone who has got a new GT to not drive it for a month or two then sell for double the RRP? Nothing. Ford will be unhappy with them, well boohoo I'm sure they'll be stressed about that with the free £350k sitting in their bank.I actually think that if any do come to market straight away they're going to be close to a million. Aventador SVs were going for double straight after deliveries started and this is far more exclusive.
I genuinely hope they don't get flipped though and that they all get used properly.
Why not build as many as they get orders for?
As desirable as it is to those with the means, it's not like there will be thousands of them as the house-sized price is an effective enough barrier to entry to the GT club!
It's fine for low volume manufacturer like Pagani to say they're only building a handful of a model because that's what they do, but for Ford to try and do similar just smacks of marketing b.s.

Remember Ford aren't making them (well not completely) Multimatic is, so it's debatable if there's any profit in the car at all. It'll be interesting to see if they can get to their stated production capacity of 250 cars a year, I doubt if it'll be more.
So I don't think the numbers are held low for any other reasons than those above.

if they wanted to make 1000 a year then they would find a way of making them, they did invent the car production process after all!
I think the decision to have multimatic build them is borne of their desire to only make 250 a year in order to max out on the marketing-led exclusivity angle.
Which is of course the reason for a halo model like this but they do seem to be taking it a bit too far with the 'special journey' to ownership that the chosen are about have the opportunity to pay for.
After all, it's a stunning car and the world would not be a worse place with more of them in it!

It looks like Ford are extending the GT Build to four years. Maybe another 250 cars?

“While we can’t build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors,” says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand.”http://performance.ford.com/enthusiasts/media-room...
This was actually their plan from the word go; or at least it was certainly how I understood it. The first batch targeted in the way it was, with the second batch going mostly to previous gen owners etc.
