Displays on race days
Discussion
I have often displayed my cars at circuits on race days, and at shows, often for charity, and found everyone who comes to look very careful and considerate of all the cars.
So I was really surprised and disappointed to come back to my McLaren at Silverstone on Sunday, where it had been parked in the Supercar display, to find someone's child had left nice sticky ice cream finger marks on the driver's door.
This is just lack of decent parental supervision. Given the revolting consistency of the ice cream, with luck it reappeared in recently digested form on the upholstery of whatever the parents had driven to the circuit in, and will prove nicely challenging to remove.
Sadly now I will think twice about showing in future.

Thanks Craig. You obviously think that's reasonable. I do not. Could easily have been a chip from a swinging camera, handbag or zip. It's a simple issue of respect for other people's stuff - look but be careful and please don't touch - and parents actually supervising their children and instilling the same values in them too. Oh, and a little more politeness in the world would be nice too!

I do think it's a acceptable risk if you decide to 'show' your car on a public display. If it happened to me, I wouldn't be that bothered, it's not damaged anything, it's not cost you any money, no big deal. If a little ice cream on your door angers you enough to come on to a car forum and whinge about it, wish ill on the parents of the kid and threaten to never show your car again.. then I think you you're probably best to stay away from shows in the future. I posted about a similar thing at the Autosport show

I do not think there's any excuse, it's not yours, so don't bloody touch it.

Are you sure it was ice-cream? There's a story about the last McLaren F1 when it was in the Park Lane showroom - apparently one of the sales staff found, err, man-fluid on it shortly after a gentleman in a coat was paying close attention to it....

I sympathise with the OP on ths one - although it only takes a couple of seconds attention lapse and a small child leaves ice-cream finger marks. It could also be that the parents were worried about trying to rub them off.
I was persuaded to show 6 of my cars in a village event last year (classic Alfas - certainly not in the supercar league). Plan was that either myself or my OH would stay with the cars, but the organiser assured us that the cars would be fine, so we went for a wander. When we came back, there was no sign of the organiser, a small child was sitting in my Spider pulling on the indicator and wiper stalks while its heavily tattooed and massively overweight mother took photos with her phone. They seemed surprised when I asked what the hell they thought they were doing.
I'm not precious about my cars, but I won't be doing it again! (Although in this case I feel the guy who organised it was at least partly to blame).

I can sympathise with the OP, whilst it was only ice cream this time it could've been worse.
I once displayed at a car show and came back to a ding in the lower sill. The public will never show the same level of respect towards your car as you do.
That said, life in short and I'll continue to display at carefully selected events as I like the social aspect.

On the flip side, I've never had any problem at all with any of the shows my cars have been at. If anything, I've encouraged people to have a closer look. If they look interested and respectable then they can climb in for photos etc. This has been the same at events ranging from Wilton and Cliveden (both well marshalled) to village fetes and town shows (e.g. Faversham, tomorrow - should be good).
