I actually had visions of this happening, that's why I have been reluctant to take my car to Europe through Calais

We arrived back at Calais just as this was starting to happen.

I was in a Porsche Cayman, but the car is only a year old and I was seriously wondering how I was going to get through without incurring damage.

By accident I ended up in the queue with a 911 and another Cayman in front of me and at one point the rocks were landing just short of the lead car, who had the sense to wait until the lorries and buses moved forward and left enough of a gap for all of us to run the gauntlet.

Once we got through and started to queue at the passport control, I did see a Corvette Z06 with damage along with numerous buses and lorries.

Not ideal I know, but up to now at least the migrants appear to have been more interested in getting on lorries rather than damaging cars and or assaulting people. I have since read that it was well organised (by a UK anachist group apparently), but it remains to be seen if it will be repeated!!

Dunkirk for us now as we are done with Calais.

Vernz, we're off to France tomorrow and going to Dunkirk, you think this is a better alternative? Bit worried about all this rock throwing business!!!!

We have taken a sports car through Calais twice a year for the last 10 years or so and never experienced anything like that.

I think our view of Calais however has become steadily more downbeat with various migrant and striking issues that we have been caught up in.

I think there are still some migrant issues connected with Dunkirk, but not on the scale of those found or associated with Calais and in particular the jungle.

We are off to Spa next year and effectively go past the turn off for Dunkirk, so for us it will be a no brainer, but during similar busy times experienced recently with Le Mans and the Euro's, I will now avoid Calais where possible.

That said I usually find that the best time to do something after an incident is generally the following week or so, because the police have usually stepped up security and resolved things sufficiently. I'm sure it will be fine, but personally if my preference was the ferry over the tunnel, I'd be happier opting for Dunkirk.

Thanks for your reply. We're committed to travel by DFDS to Dunkirk now so hopefully all is well when we go through.

Spent last week in Dunkirk with work. No sign of anything so I'd imagine you'll be fine.

We came back via the tunnel and again nothing but we were hearing of trouble on the road from the motorway to the ferry terminal.
