I have had my Passat R36 for years, mainly because it ticks so many boxes in terms of a car I can get the whole family in, including 2 dogs.

However, I feel ready in life for a GT car. However my biggest issue is I need one that I can still put the dogs in the back of. I am not so fussed about 4 seats though.

I had my heart set on a V8 Vantage, but I have seen some amusing threads on here about things people can fit in the back of one. But these threads also commented that there is not a huge amount of room specifically for dogs, due to the angle of the glass. We have a beagle and a small dog. So neither are huge dogs.

I realise I could get another Estate like the R36, obviously some of the RS Audis are very nice, but it feels much like a straight swap rather than something to really get excited about.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Budget is around £40k

I am guessing unless your not bothered about them having access to light an air, using a sports/GT car boot will be a challenge. Of course you can put seat protectors in and they can use the passenger seats, or if the dog is small it can lie in the footwell.

If you must have some boot space then these are the only options I can think off

- Porsche 997 (rear seats fold flat, but there is risk of them jumping in the cabin)
- Audi RS3/RS4 (not a GT as such but great cars)
- Jaguar F-Type Coupe (has a small hatchback boot)
- BMW Z4M Coupe

MK2 TT-RS? With £40k you can buy one for £30k and then spend £10k getting it up to 550, reliable, hp. Take out the back seats smile

Used to have a RS2 many years back - the rear windscreen was full of dog-snot as we would accelerate to the country side! An RS6 Avante would fit the bill nicely......with the solar panel full panoramic sunroof option - which keeps the interior nice and cool......

What do we think about the Porsche Panamera?

I have never liked the look of the car from the side, but in terms of box ticking, it does tick quite a few.

I recently got this for my daily. Ticks all the boxes you want a great drive, quick enough, mega stereo, GT ride to the Alps in the winter, sky glass roof / wingback seats / and of course that 4.2 N/A (gorgeous) engine.

Rocky the boxer is a very happy lad! biglaugh

All kept nice and tidy by one of these... http://www.boot-buddy.com/

Funny thing, when I was looking I came across this car, I had never heard of it. It's faster than my R36 and looks actually quote good. However I just can not bring myself to own a Volvo yet. Maybe in 10 years time smile

does that 'solar' power some sort of ventilation system when parked? or is it just heat reflective?

I'm 33 and felt the same. I was wrong. My V70R is brilliant.

The V60 Polestar is epic by all accounts.

It's a lovely car, but I was trying to avoid another car similar to my R36 Estate.

Before I decided on the R36, I also looked at the RS4 and my only deciding factor really was I figured a big ass n/a engine would have less problems. Which I still think was a sensible decision.

This is just a thought but won't a nice car like those mentioned get coated in dog hair?

My parents have a springer spaniel and her hair gets literally everywhere.

On the old family A6 Allroader - the panel was solar - which meant that the air-con/climate control would run whilst the key was not in the car. It was a pretty pricy option £3K or £4K - but it worked well. But we still kept the windows open incase some thing failed - didn't want to take the chance.......

I went through the same thing 3years ago changing my biscay blue r36 estate with 2 cars biggrin and that fit the bill really well.
Have a look at an M3 5 door or M5/C63/E63, this could be the solution. My 3series I have a car hammock that covers the seats and still allows you to use the belts to clip a dog harness to. You won't find a perfect solution. I didn't and I miss the R36 for the practicality use. I've ordered an a6avant to replace the beemer but it's been fun.
The panamera is a really good car, not to everyone's taste looks wise but they drive like a porsche should. I didn't notice if the seats fold flat in the back. Check first as it may have been an option ( just like the 3seriesirked)

Thanks, that's bloody brilliant! living in a hot country this'll certainly sway my choice, did other cars have this option do you know?
