I'm torn between practicality and pure enjoyment for myself. I could do with 4 seats as it would keep the wife and daughter happy, however we always have the wifes car to use as a family.

So I can't decide between the following:

Audi R8 Plus vs McLaren 540c or Ferrai California

The California ticks the 4 seats box but the new McLaren looks awesome too, even if it will be a bare cockpit.

I'll be driving it everyday too, so i'm not sure if that counts out the California and the McLaren. Do McLaren's have many issues?

Whilst the Audi is probably the most expensive of them all i know its going to run like clockwork on a daily basis.

Any help, advice, opinions welcome, thanks.

I'd go with pure enjoyment and forget practicality! McLaren 540c or Ferrai California, most likely the 540 if it was me. Will be an event and put a smile on your face every time rather than sitting behind that Audi steering wheel, those rings reminding you constantly it's a mass produced brand. I suspect depreciation will be far less on the F or Mc if that's a consideration. I know a couple of people that run Cali's as daily's with no issues. No experience of the 540.

really the 12c? So an approved 12c will probably come with a good spec too right?

Not many people scrimped on the options with 12C's cars new. In fact some people went mental with carbon everything which is nice but a bit unnecessary IMHO
I think the 540 is appealing to people wanting a supercar on a tight budget. They can stretch so far to just about get in the car but options aren't an option if you know what I mean.

The back seats in a California are ok for a small child but in reality as they grow they wont want to sit in their long and you probably wont want to drive the car enthusiastically with them in it anyway. Same applies to a Porsche Turbo

The R8 is nice but its still an Audi and no matter what people say it does not have the supercar status and will depreciate faster than it accelerates. I'd rather have a Lamborghini Gallardo LP560 which will be as cheap to run overall.

12C is such an accomplished all round car and the best of the bunch as far as I can see.

Another vote for the 12C, I bought one last week and couldn't be happier.

Depending on the age/size of your child, the 2012 onward Aston DB9 or Virage is a cracking car and a lot of enjoyment. Go for the Volante for open top motoring. Coupe is beautiful. Very quick and very stylish and great steering feel and nimble for the size. An occasion every time you go out.

Whatever you choose, personally, I would suggest getting a 2+2 as you can use it a lot more than a straight 2 seater. Especially if you have just the one child.

If it was my everyday car I'd go for the R8. It's less in your face than the others. Sure it would be the last if it was my weekend car but that's not what your asking for. Perhaps an FF or 991 Turbo would be a better shout? 12c, while a very good car it's getting a bit long in the tooth and again a while great weekend hooning car I'm not sure I'd want to face the maintenance cost of an older car especially an older supercar as a daily.

Firstly, thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply.

Im going to test drive the R8 both new and an older 5.2 manual, quite a difference between 80k and 120k!

Then i'm going to test drive the 540c, the McLaren finance option is pretty good with a 30k deposit around 7%apr, however i think Audi will get it much lower than that, ive heard around 5%.

Will keep you all posted, thanks so much.

FF if it is in budget - true 4 seater and the engine will make you much happier than the turbo stuff in the mclaren, esp at slow speeds and normal driving. Only (imo significant) downside is that no manual option available, but that is a sign of the times unfortunately
