Buying wisely and cars as investments

It's true, fancy cars are a lot more common these days, but I'd add a few caveats. One, sadly nothing is quite as exciting as it was when you were a kid. Those formative experiences (the Countach, the Testarossa, etc) are just so powerful and last a lifetime. But the same thing happens now. I turned up at my brother's house in my 599 and my 9-year old nephew damn near wet himself with excitement. Second, outside of central London they're really not common. I live only 70 miles north of London and in the past year I'd say that sightings of Ferrari, Lambo and McLaren combined is still in single digits. As for the genuine, full-fat supercar stuff, they're almost non-existent on the road outside of London. Saw an Enzo drive past last month and it literally stopped me in my tracks.

My family have owned Ferraris in the past which we've been lucky enough to make a little bit on, and we currently own a 458, which we've had sinc Febraury. Even in that time the values have steadily been creeping up. I made a youtube video talking about this recently actually. If you'd like to check it out the link is below

Correct. Seeing a Mondial or 512BBi was an occasion, seeing a Testarossa was jaw dropping and seeing a Countach was simply like seeing a spaceship. I'll never forget the moment a Countach appeared at the top of our road once in the late 80s. It was truly one of the most memorable moments of my life. The thread of old Lambo photos on here brings back some fantastic memories.
Even when I got my first Ferrari in the mid 90s it was very rare to see one on the road and they were still hard cars to drive so by nature more limited in appeal.
These days you are tripping over supercars pretty much anywhere in the South East and many are driven by fat businessmen who are more concerned with the statement it makes about them than the driving experience.
The wow factor went for me long ago and I get more excited about seeing a mint Integrale or R230 SL these days than I do any modern Ferrari or Lambo.
This is correct and resonates. Just one early 90's example was when myself and a friend stopped the 308 and 512 by a pub one evening for a quick Appletise. As we were climbing out the entire pub emptied to come and stare at the cars and asking questions. Two young ladies then asked if we could take them for a quick spin. I declined with a "sorry I'm almost out of petrol" but she promptly rummaged around in her bag to produce a crisp tenner. The four of us started strolling back to our cars when two guys emerged and started following us looking somewhat upset. They were the boyfriends !Even when I got my first Ferrari in the mid 90s it was very rare to see one on the road and they were still hard cars to drive so by nature more limited in appeal.

It does seem back then they were seen as some kind of UFO's. Certainly much rarer than today
That's a brilliant story.
I had a STAMPED jiffy bag left on my speciale windscreen addressed to "owner of yellow car" with a note inside from a lady asking if I would drive her and her friend to the Paul Raymond adult awards. Together. In the same car. At the same time, as "we are both models". She kindly left her agency/business card inside too and a link to her 'specialist' website. I'll try get a picture when I can of the letter!

Unfortunately, I didn't take the ladies up on the offer as I was getting married two weeks after and didn't fancy my future wife kicking off around that time that I was out at Cafe de Paris with two random "service providers" called Dakota and Strawberry / Snowflake / Treacle. A mate offered to take her in his M4 but she politely declined the offer his wife said.
Anyway, I think the kind lady who proposed I chauffeur her to a brass awards ceremony must live locally. I've seen her walking around in suitable Spearmint Rhino attire, perspex shoes etc and a cracking kilo or two of makeup on so I avoid getting in and out of my cars when she's nearby. My friend with the M4 who offered his car, tells me that she is a frequent host on late night specialist television programmes involving people phoning in.
If anyone wants to get in contact with the lady, her contact details are on the back of the card.
RamboLambo, perhaps you could extol to her the reasoning as to why McLaren's are better than Ferraris over a glass of Sancerre or seven...

I probably have less than 20 more years where i can continue enjoying cars in my current good state of health. Time is against me. I wish I could buy more but I can't. I worry a little about depreciation but I'm focused more on enjoying (literally) while i can. We're all gonna go tits up and it's nearer than you think. Morbid but true.
