+1 and some good advice on the coil over pack there. I spent 4k on mine and went for the mag-ride suspension when selling mine and warned the onward owner of the options going forward. To my knowledge they have not had any issues.

40k max is pushing it a bit IMHO. 45k would be my bottom line as the ones I viewed at 40k were all a bit stone chipped or tatty. Loads around at dealers around that price point. I did the research and decided I was OK with buying private rather than giving some back Street 2nd hand dealer 5k for basically washing the car. None of the second hand warranty deals will be worth a crap I figured. I've budgeted for a set of coil over or replacemental alternative shocks if the mag ride goes south, but not at an audi dealer.
Touch wood the R8 is possibly the ideal car for me so far, glad I bought one and especially one with lots of extras and an exhaust kit. Go for it if you see the right car!

Are high miles an issue?

100k miles on an 9 year old A4 wouldn't bother me and it might be 10-12k miles a year but does it make a difference on an R8? Would it bother me on a 911 or Boxster? Doubt it, and I'd expect it to a certain extent?

As Long as it has a good SH. In many respects it shows a car that's used, and that could be better than one that stands around.

That said, I'd only anticipate using one approx 4-5000 miles a year anyway.

Any experience of high mileage cars?

I'm not sure that resale value is a massive issue as it would probably be a keeper but for the purposes of man maths then a car that has bottomed out price wise would be good!

I don't think it is but you don't see many high miles cars , saying that 60-80k would be considered high mileage I guess. Parts cost are horrendous go into it with your eyes open, it circa 3-4k for a clutch fitted, engine out apparently on v8 for a seized ac pump similar price. Hence low mileage cars attract a premium.

Saying that they are considered one else of the most reliable "supercars" even if some don't class them as one, and are much cheaper to run than other marque's I believe. R8 forum is a Good place to start reading.

I think they are a superb car having had mine a month and would recommend one

I enjoyed my time with a manual 4.2 R8 a few years ago. Mine had mag ride which was fine when I sold it with 25k miles on the clock. I don't think I'd have fancied that rebuild/replacement cost on the mag dampers though.

They are quick enough on the road (even if not supercar fast), and extremely comfortable for long journeys even if you are limited for trips away by the frunk space. Overall very nice cars.

I'm looking at a 2010 manual with 36k on the clock but i've just checked the MOT history and it says nearside front and offside front both have a light misting of oil.

I assume this would be the start of the mag ride issue?

Misting is another word for leaking (i.e. broken) so yes.

Mine were £1800 and are perfect. Also come with a Magnetic Ride delete kit so you don't get the Mag Ride warning on the dash.

The company that refurbishes them are based in Poland and don't reply to emails (from experience). Calls are difficult and they are around £400 per shock to be refurbed anyway.

Anyone reading this thread, just trust me, stay away from there / be prepared to replace them / budget for swapping them out with coilovers.

Hundreds of posts on them in the states.

Yes, as before, £1800 for a full set of fully adjustable (and dare I say it comfier) re-buildable coilovers. Or you spend £400 a corner repairing the Mag Ride, or £1200 a corner replacing them, for them to very likely break on you again. As I've say, three of mine went within months. I've known people to replace them within 12 months....

Very well documented issue on R8Talk if you feel I'm exaggerating smile

Good to hear better options exist. Who did you get them from?
