Looking for interesting ideas.

I've had the car getting on for 18 months and have nothing but admiration for it but thinking about replacing due to itchy feet. Situation: live in Central London with an underground parking space. My only regular trip is to the golf club once or twice a week 30 miles away down the A3. Otherwise: long weekends say 6 per year, to France 1/2 per year, visiting family in the South East 6 per year, work-related 4 per year plus golf in other locations and weekend blasts making up the rest. Roughly 6-7k miles pa including Europe stuff. No kids no dogs don't drive to airports.

I'm fighting off the temptation to get something sensible (i.e. new S3 Sportback or similar) then hiring something less sensible for the odd trip maybe 3 times a year as I like having the car there for when a spontaneous situation arises. Even though for the majority of journeys I get no benefit from the added performance mainly due to traffic.

I would consider S3 plus a GT3 or even a classic but as I only have one parking space it might be too much hassle renting another one nearby and unless it was very nearby would remove the spontaneous benefit point.

I have basically fallen in love with the new R8 plus. However even with a good discount (10%?) i'm still a bit nervous about depreciation and it would be quite a step up in financial commitment but i'm up for that. I would be interested to hear what those that have driven the previous R8 plus as well as the new one think. Perhaps I should consider the previous one too? Needless to say I would test drive all contenders before committing. Open to other marques too of course.

All ideas appreciated and forgive the somewhat open situation..

Maybe also post on the Porsche forum - I think AndrewD has/had a new R8 and a 991.2 Turbo - not excatly the same, but probably in a good position to compare the two cars.

Do Golf clubs fit in these cars (mid-engined) though?
For your use I would also consider a used FF if they are in budget in the UK

As a left field one, what about a V8S Bentley Continental, perfect for golf and long trips, and surprisingly quick.

I used to drive 40-minutes to the golf club in a 911 with the clubs rattling around in the passenger seat. Annoying, to say the least! I've solved the problem with a Ferrari 599. Clubs fit easily in the boot and I get to listen to a sonorous V12 instead. Happy days. As an earlier poster said, the FF is mega also. Have only been a passenger in one of those, but was mightily impressed.

599 all day... two set of clubs in the boot and still plenty of room for luggage. Fairly nippy as well as having a reasonably pleasant engine note...

detee V8S over the W12? I've always liked the look of the facelifted continental but hadn't given it serious thought due to the mass of the things. But could well be worth a test drive.
SL550M I love 599s but how are you finding the running (esp. servicing) costs? I've looked at FF prices and they're beyond budget so non-starter. Yours looks stunning. Was the HGTE pack an essential for you?
GusB ditto above I notice yours is HGTE also

Hi James. The thirst for unleaded is fairly prodigious, but for the mileage you'll cover that's not much of an issue. When you're driving it you won't care anyway. I bought from a main dealer with the 2-year warranty, although nothing has gone wrong in my 14 months of ownership. You do get the occasional random warning light...but mysteriously they seem to disappear as quickly as they appear! The annual service was a couple of grand. Yes, for me the HGTE was desirable, although mine is retro-fitted, so it has the regular Daytona seats. The whole ownership experience has been a joy. Drive one and you'll be hooked.
GusB has had his 599 considerably longer and, in fact, his comments on this forum helped me take the plunge. I'm grateful to him! All the research I did prior to purchase suggested they are essentially robust cars.

Servicing is c£1000 at a main dealer, a bit more for a "major". I also get "other jobs" done at Autofficina, this includes changing the gearbox oil this year to keep her in top nick as a keeper. Over 4 years / c18,000 miles I guess I spend around £2000 / 2500 per year on servicing and maintenance. £900 on insurance and an unknown amount on fuel...

I have tried a Hurracan / Aventador on the road and track with a view to switching, both fantastic but didn't fit with my lifestyle. The DB11 underwhelmed, great at Millbrooke, just wasn't special enough on the A40 in the rain... When I'm sat in the 599 on the A40 in the rain I'm still excited as I'm in a Ferrari... I know, I have the car mentally of an 11 year old and I should understand that I could shave 1.3 seconds of a 0-100 time if I had X car, however I doubt I would feel the same as it's not a Ferrari...

PS: One car that I did nearly buy this year was a 991 GT3 in white, a fantastic car... however I know I'm in the wrong section and should go and take my Martini racing jacket off to the Porsche section...

Not as a replacement, as a 2nd fun car... however not even my man maths could square that circle...

Off subject but as a "normal" / daily drive I have been looking at XFRs and XJRs.... now they are great value, especially the XFR.

I would say yes over the 12, try one, I did and bought a 2015, four wheel drive and quicker than you would expect. I never considered one but suddenly I liked the look, I would not rule out the California either. I agree with one of the other posters it is annoying having clubs in the passenger seat.

Maybe we need a petrolheads golf day out, I am at Ganton if anyone is heading North, it is magnificent!

As an owner of a 997.2 Turbo S and someone who flirted with buying V8/V12 super car before getting the Turbo:

The 599 is an incredible car- I have seen good pictures of it too, but most photos don't do it justice, it is stunning in a very dignified and almost restrained way, compared to many over-styled cars.

I have driven two examples (one in Italy and one in the UK), the engine is a work of art, driving one, or even just being in one feels special. Downside is the width and weight, definitely not a car you would throw around a b-road for spirited drive or take on track. In that regard the Turbo is so much more usable and easier to enjoy.

The prices seem to have risen a fair bit too- when I was looking around 2015 there were good examples around 80k-85k I think. Today there are only two I see listed here under 100k (mid to high 90's). Neither has a meaningful warranty.

The running cost are a very big step up from a 997.

I didn't buy one as a Ferrari just did not suit my needs or lifestyle, the 997.2 Turbo is an incredible all rounder and price vs performance you can not get better really. I love my 997.2 S- can't think of a single car I would change it for without having to spend massively more....

Now if money was no object I would own bothbiggrin...

Often find myself in a similar situation with my 997 GTS. Also a keen golfer and the family wagon tends to be used by the Mrs when I play golf so can't have anything that doesn't fit the clubs in. Still get funny looks pulling the sticks and trolley out the back of the Porsche, I think mainly because people wouldn't expect it to fit them in.

Hankering after a 12C, think I'd just about squeeze the clubs in although one or two might need to go on the passenger side. As a result, in no rush to change. 599 is a great shout though if like me, golf is something you wouldn't sacrifice.

As an alternative to the 599..

What about a California? I think they are cracking cars and prices really seem to be in the doldrums for a pre-T model. They can't go too much further south can they?

There was a readers car article on here a while ago, chap lived in London I think and found it brilliantly practical.

I only ended up with a 599 over a Cali because I really wanted a v12.

As has been said, it is a big beast and may not be that practical if parking is a bit tight at home?

The gen1 R8 v10 plus is a superb car I'd say, definitely would be my pick for it's price. Ok it's not as quick as the new one but I actually like the way it looks more than the new car and that v10 is the same unit on a lower state of tune and it's a superb engine.

Thanks again for your thoughts. I've come up with the following shortlist for now:

Audi R8 v10 plus
Merc AMG GT S
Aston v12 vantage S
McLaren 540c
Ferrari 599

Any experiences of the above very welcome - will start test driving next weekend.

How about an Aston Martin DBS? They seem like a solid investment now?

Or controversially, Nissan GTR's start at £35k or "as new" fully loaded models are £77k boxedin

I did a supercar rally in GTR a few years ago. Amazingly capable and more special than I expected but I don't yearn after one

I've driven all those, apart from the Fezzer, and I think you'll find that it's not easy to find something that ticks as many boxes as the Porker...

Unless you want a totally different look/driving experience. Imo...
