Doesn't seem to be much mention at all of the 'new' 600 bhp R8....any owners out there got any comments?...I am undecided on the styling, generally like it, it does look more modern to me than say the Ferrari 488, which to me is starting to look a bit dated. The only thing with the R8 styling is its a bit sort of dumpy from the front, nice from many angles, not sure on others, but as I say overall does look bang upto date & quite futuristic, very much iron mans stead

5.2 lambo V10 has got to go well & sound great, 4 wheel drive & audi build inside, not quite as 'loud' looking as a lambo....again ticking many boxes there for me...

so opinons & thoughts & experiences anyone?

Not driven the V10 R8 to be honest but I do own a Huracan. The Huracan is an absolute weapon and a very quick road car and I'm sure the R8 is just as capable. Beyond the driving capabilities tho the R8 is a little mundane in my opinion, it's more Porsche Turbo S than Lambo, Ferrari and that is in no way dissing either of those cars but they just lack the supercar wow factor but I'd be the first to admit performance wise they are indeed super cars.
Be interesting also to see where the residuals go on the R8 they might well be many thousands cheaper initially than the Lambo but it 3 or 4 years time I'd expect the depreciation to have been steeper on the R8. Suppose it depends on what your looking for, a daily supercar or a weekend toy!.

In my opinion, the new R8 is so good and practical that it falls into the same bracket as the Porsche Turbo s and the AMG GTs in being 'sensible'. All it's positives are the very last reason to buy a supercar. It doesn't have the beauty of the 488, the delicacy of the 570s, or the drama of the Huracan, and they just feel a little uninspiring IMHO.

Really? The 2 years since launch Ferrari model is starting to look dated?

Things sure do move fast these days!

One of the (very) large positives about the R8 is an absolute brilliant NA v10. Is that one of your 'very last reasons to buy a supercar'....?

Personally I like the styling of the older car as the new one seems more slab sided but overall the R8s are brilliant cars imo.

In response to the 488 looking dated, yes I think it is slightly, It is not that different to a 458 , and that's been around since 2010, so the basic shape is 7 years old.
I have owned both & both very impressive cars, but styling wise I have just 'gone off' them a little , maybe after owning 3 458's a 458 spider & a 488 along the way its me that has got so used to the styling, but I don't think they are as good looking as I used to , so lets just say that then!

yes of course a 5.2 V10 naturally aspirated has to be a good thing!!that's my prime reason for consideration ..think a test drive might be In order...

A screaming V10 that you can also get in the Huracan, and to be fair all modern supercars sound great in their own way. Even the 570s's drone of an exhaust comes alive at full chat, not V10 epic but still exciting.

I'm not saying that the R8 isn't a brilliant car, I'm just saying that you don't choose one supercar over another based on it being more 'practical'. If the fact it has a great engine is enough then that's great, but it doesn't work for me when wrapped in so much underwhelming practical sensibleness.

My son in law has a new r8 v10 plus and I have been in it a few times now, after the 458 and 488 I think you will be disappointed with the r8 performance wise but then again it depends what your priorities are in a car. The Audi is a lovely car don't get me wrong, it's just can't cut it in the supercar world against the ferraris you have owned.

R8 plus is quicker than a 458 without doubt!

Good:
Very fast.
0-60 in 2.6secs.
Good handling.
Servicing.
Value for money.

Bad:
A bit dull to look at.
A bit dull to drive.
Badge.

If you think of it as a 911 Turbo alternative, and can accept the lesser badge, it makes good sense to own one.

0-60 maybe but after that the 458 will reel it in and pass it with ease.

Love the 458, but the R8 V10 Plus is significantly faster in a straight or twisty line.

Audi R8 V10 Plus:
0-60 = 2.6secs
1/4 mile = 10.5secs
Nurburgring = 7.32mins.

Ferrari 458:
0-60 = 3.0secs
1/4 mile = 10.8secs
Nurburgring = 7.38mins.

You could say the same about an Nissan GTR, is that better than a 458/488?

I think they are fantastic cars however if you want a car that has outstanding performance, noise, that V10, super cool technology and toys, pops and bangs on gear change then get the R8. Some people here say its not a supercar which i can see what they are saying, however just because it doesn't have the "badge" doesn't make it rubbish. Go drive one and make your decision on that.

I drove my friends 458 Spider recently and i must say the V10 Pus R8 is significantly faster and had a lot more drama with noise compared to the 458. The 458 is a prettier car though hands down, then you get into the conversation of value and retention which is where the 458 wins. Tough choice, the better car is cheaper and will lose more money IMO.

Didn't take long, been out in an R8...

Firstly quite surprised that it feels smaller inside than a 458/488, really thought with it been german it would have more interior space, really does feel quite small. Annoyingly there is a bench sticks out behind the seats that seems to rob quite a bit of rear movement in the seat, so being tall I found that I had to have the seat backrest quite upright to allow legroom, or incline it more & have less legroom..hmm never thought I would find more space in an Italian 2 seater than a german one..but anyway not enough of a problem to be an issue. Car feels nice inside, do think again it feels more modern than Ferrari's, quite futuristic, again a bit tight, and the windscreen is very small letterbox view..seems more lambo than audi. Love the B&O sound, ventilation buttons etc are nice , feel good & look great, just a lovely quality feel to the interior, seats comfy too.
Virtual dash a bit glary , had part of the drive in the dark ,and couldn't dim it enough for my liking, even at the dimmest I found it a bit bright & distracting, lots of buttony things to have to get used to to change about all the stuff on the screen etc...but again felt pretty futuristic in a good way.
Engine sound ,pretty impressive, just the right amount for me, you can see it as a daily , smooth & refined in comfort & then in dynamic with loud exhaust etc has some lovely pops & bangs & a nice screech,..yep the sound is good for me
Now the surprise was it didn't feel that fast, the 458 felt faster..maybe its just the comfort inside or something that makes it feel more sedate, I think I need another longer drive in one, bit of a disappointment really performance wise, but it was greasy roads etc so never really gave it full beans, so need another go in the dry to judge it better etc
Styling...hmmm not loving it, but hot hating it either, positves are it looks bang upto date, fururistic, downside, its a bit pudgy , stubby in some ways
I car I could not be so worried about leaving out etc, and would use all year round , unlike the F cars which I have more pampered & used as A to A cars....Badge doesn't bother me, in fact I feel a lot more comfortable with the audi /r8 owner than I do being a Ferrari owner, so that's a positive.
Jury is out, will mull , maybe have another drive...impressed overall though , it certainly could be my everyday supercar

Sounds like youd regret not buying a 458 if you got the R8.

And therein lays the kicker. Designs which are bang upto date are, by their own virtue, prone to aging rapidly. They are for a specific time. Timeless designs age much slower and some hardly at all. Majority of people cannot tell a 15 year old 911 from a new one.

That above is a very very good point.
