2 new Italian purchases- advice please
Discussion
Okay, last Thursday, I had a long telephone conversation, popped in to see some options up close on Saturday, and its finally sorted on the LM640 front, I'm due for a summer 2007 delivery (cut into a 4 year list, ouch.)I've paid a deposit and I specified (within the Privilegio system) an Arancio Ishtar exterior with a Nero perseus interior with grigio stitching, carbon brakes, nav system, glass engine cover etc. I've been told I can change the spec until next spring, no doubt I will be doing so as I can't decide between several combinations
As for the Maser QP, I've been told I can get one to spec this year, but I'm having doubts, looking into potential alternatives.

Top colour combo, fair play

Still okay for that 'ride'?
Awesome, sounds mental. Manual I hope? I'm off to actually look what colour you've ordered...
How much was the priviledge of cutting into a 4 year list?

Thats a cracking colour to have matey. Pretty damn similar to Simon George's Arancio Atlas I think it is.
Its a lighter shade than that, multi layer that changes from vibrant orange to yellow, as I said I've put it down as that on the spec card, I'll change my mind a hell of a lot knowing me, as for the interior I'm thinking either a 2 tone as can be seen here:
Or nero with stitching in the colour of the final exterior choice to keep it as tasteful if that is possible. Im not going to be able to focus today obviously.
The only reservations I had were towards the wheels, I wasn't keen on the hermera design but its grown on me, I'm 99% sure on changing the spec to paint them black.
You can still have that ride Rob, as long as there's enough cash placed on the seat when you leave there was a premium on getting the build date, but to be honest its pretty insignificant compared to the fully specced price, and its worth it because I'm an impatient so and so. oh and its in manual of course.
Now excuse me a second....
Personally i think unless you own either for 2 months and sell them on whilst still rare (as there will always be some idiot that pays a premium to won one off list) then both are going to run the risk of tanking after a short time....Given a choice (and having has a DB9) probably would go for LP as the looks of the 599 don't draw me in as much as say the 550 did, and I also have heard a few whispers from the factory that the engine has a few issues as do some aprts of the body under strain (doors etc - as in the 612) - personally I woudl rather let these niggles be ironed out on someone else's chequebook.....think if you can everyone should have a stab at a Lambo if they can afford it - prob not as practical as the 599 but purely on looks alone i think it is more appealing.
Why not save some dosh and bid the 575 HGTC - that is going to be under pressure soon and is a great stop gap (but again still wears the 12 cyl deval risk)....
To be honest from the DB9 you will find build quality far better and prob reliability too...still cannot believe a £100k Aston ssqueaks and rattles as much as it did...poor...
I will get my colleague here at work to write about the Quattroporte as he has owned one for 5 months now and has driven to italy adn back in it ...

Thanks for the advice, tbh Im really not bothered about depreciation on the Lambo, I'll hopefully be keeping this for a while, and I've taken into account a depreciation hit and would simply prefer a new car, as its very rare to find a car in this calibre that hasn't been well used (read 6000 RPM step off starts).
Look forward to hearing about the Maserati
Oh and thanks everyone for your comments, much appreciated.

Do you ever have the idea that someone would want to buy a car because they wanted it? And not what someone else would pay for it in a few months?
Maserati Quattorporte:
Bought mine about 5 months ago, second hand (2005).
Dynamically the car is superb, it behaves like a much smaller car, in fact on the run from the Italian exit of the Mont Blanc down to the valley I was astonished at how you can pile into corners really late and the turn in is so precise that you never have to make any adjustments, even Elena enjoyed it! We went from London to Burgundy to Ferrara and it never skipped a beat, which is the trip I originally bought my old 3200 GT for but then got cancelled due to a huge motorbike accident.
I drive it every day to work (20 miles round trip) and the gearbox behaves well, slightly jerky when cold (take 2-3 minutes to warm the G/B oil) and it best to use the manual shift then. After it warms up you can happily leave it in auto.
The gearbox is quite smart, you need not switch auto off if you need to hold a gear, just downsift manually and once you have dealt the irritation you lift off and it goes back to auto after a second or so.
Like most Italian supercars(ish) it could be faster in a straight line, however, I cannot stress enough how utterly delightful it is around corners. Worth noting how far back into the cabin the engine is, which must help the shift in weight very much. As we all know weight distribution is a bit of a red herring, without knowing the moment around the CG during loading transfers, and in this it looks like Maserati really did its homework.
Looks are a personal issue, obviously I like this one very much, but I grew up with 222s and Biturbos so I have a certain affinity towards the make.
On a sour note, don't expect to be treated too nicely by Maserati UK, they seem to have caught that very virulent strain of a malady which makes the infected believe they can run a business without concern for their customer.
