Gallardo E Gear Clutch
Discussion
Been to view an 06 plate E gear yesterday and am considering taking matters further, Im not too experienced in purchasing such high end cars and cant do alot more than ohh that looks nice.
I think I have read before ( maybe on here ) that there is a way to find out what % of life is left on the clutch or have I completly made that one up ?
Anything else I should be considering other than, Sevice history, Outstanding loans, insurance claims,

I think you can plug an e-gear in and get a readout on clutch wear. I don't think this is possible on a manual, but thats irrelevant to you anyway. How many miles has it done, and has it ever had a clutch? That was the question I would start with when finding a car... Obviously 15k+ miles and no clutch change was a little warning to me that the clutch may be near the end of its life (or of course not if its had a new one).
Having just bought mine the dealer is doing a service, and as part of the "health check" will get a clutch check done for me... We agreed that if the clutch turns out to be close to end of life we will come up with an arrangement between us for replacing it as part of the deal.

... of course you could just use the "unknown" factor as a bargaining chip on the price, knowing you have saved some £££ in your pocket for if/when the clutch does need replacement.
As its an 06 it is out of warranty so you can take it to a good independant specialist for the work and save a fair bit anyway.

Is it really a good idea for the dealer you make the purchase from to do the check? He could in theory tell you what he likes. Hi
Ask the owner or the dealer for a snap test on the clutch and either get them to take a photo of the reading or go there when they do it. Its no more complicated than plugging in a unit, about 5 minutes work for anyone that know what they are doing. Generally they are replaced with 25% remaining so the first 25% of the reading is unusable so to speak so don't assume a 50& wear is 50% life.
Also for piece of mind, warrantywise (www.warrantywise.co.uk) will do a pretty comprehensive warranty for it. I have it on mine and its about £1,900 a year. i had a oil pump pack up on me. Ended up costing £3,000.
Also, don't just assume that dealers are the best people to maintain the car. Where are you based? I called a local dealer to enquire whether they do MOT's. They said yes thats £175 quid. When i asked why, they said they give it a look over before taking it to a garage????? Bloody madness. If its going to fail, i would prefer to save myself the £130 quid difference and let the MOT centre tell me and then source the parts for half the price from an independent. I went to a local garage and did it for £40.
Enjoy the car. Don't ask for loads of torque when at slow speeds or stationary and the clutch should last a long time. by habit, if you always go to neutral when coming to a stop, it seems to hel the life of the clutch as well. Launching it........well might feel good........ until the clutch disintegrates!!!!
Enjoy motoring Nirvana. I drove mine to Cyprus from Scotland...... va a couple of ferries obviously!!!!!

Also, it happens in the aircraft industry so im sure it does in the car industry as well........... there's nothing to stop a garage/dealer/indie etc taking a good clutch off a car and replacing it with a more worn one......... not limited to clutches obviously but any part.
What helps keep the value is paperwork, meticulous attention to detail and regular and complete servicing, whoever does it. The more you learn about your 60k, 70k, 80k investment, the better you will be able to appreciate it and look after it. Certainly most of the indies will be happy to talk to you about any aspect of your car. Its free education....... the best sort you can get.

The Gallardo I bought from an indy is in with Lambo Manchester for a service before I collect the car this week. I phoned Lambo Manc. to ask for the clutch read out and they told me it over the phone - its all good!.
They start with 0mm wear and Lambo recommend considering replacement at 5.5mm but realistically they go to 6.5mm or 7.5mm before needing replacement. My reading was 2.6mm so effectively less than half warn (on a 8,500 mile car) which hopefully means its not been driven stupidly (would indicate its on for 17k-20k miles before clutch change).
Very happy!

Mine's done 14k miles and has circa 50% clutch remaining, i currently have it for sale and was told if a main dealer took it on they would fit a new clutch which i find hard to believe.
I also had the gearbox mileage snapshot done but was warned it does not always match the mileage of the car ecu though it would indicate any large discrepancies.
