Any owners of 456GTs out there - I'm interested in views on the ownership. I thinking of investing in one for £45-50k and interested how folks have got on using as daily transport. What should I budget for service/maintenance? What do I need to look out for in a purchase? Any horror stories? It will be my first Ferrari (need the plus 2) - should I go for it?
Cheers,

Hi,
I bought a 456 GT 18 months ago, It had been owned by a friend in the FOC since new. The door seals had been replaced by the factory along with the fuel pipes under the engine bay. I used mine daily for 3 months when I first got it which cost quite a lot in fuel 13-15 mpg if your careful, never got more than 17 mpg on a longer run. So smooth to drive even in traffic although the clutch is heavy. There are plenty out there to look at so look at all of them before you buy. Mine has done 39,000 miles and is probably just about run in, it's also very quick but with no traction control on the GT's lots of care is needed in the wet. Service prices vary so phone around.
Good luck

It's worth paying particular attention to the steering rack and the electronic dampers which are porential weak points along with the window regulators. But don't be put off by a high mileage car as long as it has full service history.

Only buy one from a dealer,if you cant afford to go the main dealer route it is worth steering well clear and going for a 911.I did an article for Evo in respect of owning a 456 a few months back.

Basically annual warranty is essential and costs £3k, a annual service will cost an absolute minimum of £1700 and could easily cost double even on a really good car. A cambelt change is £1500 and is needed every 3 years or for any oil leak from the engine. The prep costs on my main dealer car were £8500 including the warranty.

You cant skip the warranty as a new engine is £68k and the gearbox is circa £20k, both of which will ensure that without a warranty this is the type of car that will end up mothballed, due to non affordability of repairs.

Its a blast, but all I would advise is that a much newer 996 drives far better, is a quarter of the price to run etc....but its no ferrari.

Forgot the best bit, the electric window design is flawed as it works it wears the mechanism.

To resolve is about £500 per door, but it can only be adjusted so many times and then its a repair job costing several thousand to put right.

The steering rack should have been recalled, if not its a 2k job.

Don't the formula warranties have a maximum claim of like £10K though?

From personal experience with my 456. Last service £400, Cam belt plus Major service £1700, Front tyres £135 each. The window mechanisms are BMW 8 series and can wear, also the dampers can leak. Sensible servicing and preventative maintenance will save you money long term. Or get your tools out and do some of the work yourself.

Hi Gareth,

I've had my 1994 456GT for 5 months now. It's been a pleasure. Really reliable, with only really minor faults, most of which I've fixed myself (so they msut be really tiny!).

I have been using mine daily - and as pracing says, it's easy to drive in traffic - and awesome on long journeys.

It's not economical on petrol around town, but on long journeys, it's pretty good (for a 5.5 V12). As for an investment - it's the only car I've ever owned that has actually gone up in price!!! Makes a nice change!

I took a formula warrantee, but when I've called to use it they've always said oh this isn't covered, nor is that, etc. It does provide some peice of mind though, especially for more serious engine problems.

The 2+2 actually are 2 proper, comfy seats in the back. Unlike most cars which claim it, (eg porche, which has bairly enough space to balance the shopping on).

Nice touch if you can find one with the full Ferrari 456GT matching luggage set.

Enjoy !

8 Series mechanisms? That's a valuable piece of info to know - BMW spare prices must be more sensible than Ferrari.
