A fire damaged part of Ferrari's headquarters on Tuesday, burning several prototype cars being developed at the Maranello production site.

"We intervened at around 1 a.m. (0000 GMT)," said an official from the local fire brigade. "A hangar in the experimental section containing several car prototypes was burning. The fire is now under control."

A Ferrari spokesman said nobody had been injured and work in most of the affected building had already been transferred to a new factory.

He said the fire caused damage to some prototype cars and equipment.

The fire official said firefighters were still at Maranello which is near Ferrari's test track site at Fiorano.

The cars owned by the press officers were rescued as they were parked next to the building which caught fire. A number of cars had to be saved from inside and outside the building, this includes the 612 Scaglietti which was pushed out of the building but two Ferrari employees who heard the alarms going off while eating at the Montana restaurant. Unfortunately a new Maserati Quattroporte was not saved which was waiting to be delivered to the Press Office. The 575 was in Russia at the time while the Challenge Stradale was parked far away from the building.

The upper floor offices of the Ferrari test drivers were burned. These are not Badoer etc but the road going Ferrari test drivers. Dario Benuzzi who is the chief test driver is angry as all 612 Scaglietti rain jackets were burned.

The automatic fire extinguishers which should of gone off automatically didn't.

The building that was damaged by the fire was to be torn down anyway to be replaced by newer buildings.

Hmm....insurance job? Lamborghini's attempt to slow down production? Disgruntled Ferrari customer's actionss after viewing the 612?

It seems as though nobody was hurt so all is well. Cars can be rebuilt.
