even those that had a twenty minute wait between getting in the car and starting the lap.
Kev that shows the difference between having two instead of one Atom at the Gate and that numbers were down this year as the wait last year for the one Atom got to 75 minutes

Thanks Steve for organising the day and great talking to you Nigel!

My photos are on Facebook in any one is interested,
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.101520091...

It was a shame on some of the waits to get on the track, I must have had one guy strapped in for 30+ mins waiting for the Vulcan, I did manage to get a nice sun tan though!

He even has a nice video of it here from my car...

Great day all in all, the wish kids after lunch really made it for me, can't wait to come back next year now.

I heard the Nissan GTR guy at the end of the day speaking to the organisers about the pit lane issues - they reckon they could have got dozens of more laps in if the pit lane was running smoothly, and I think that feeling was shared across all the gate organisers.
Would agree with this, some gates weren't quite as well organised as others, and the pit lane was just a constant traffic jam! Look forward to hearing the total amount raised though as it was a good effort by all!
I hope it's better next year.

Was yours the orange Exige that developed a minor puff of smoke form the exhaust?
The Exige which developed a bit of a smoking problem was actually a former race car. It's now running a turbocharged Audi engine with over 400bhp. Because it's a bespoke installation, there can be the odd minor issue! Worth having a look over the car though - it's absolutely beautifully prepared.

To add to the discussions, I found the waiting a bit frustrating. By lunchtime I'd done only two laps. I had a good flurry towards the end though and started to learn which way the track went! Luckily the car broke as I arrived back from my final lap of the day as the track was closed.

I'll say it before others do - really!? - I obviously didn't tell you about when I first started eating proper Indian curries in 1970 . . .

Any idea why? Weather? Not enough cars? Fewer punters because of the economy?
There were a lot of delays on the track with planes landing, and quite a few times I was queuing at the back of the pits for a good ten minutes before I could get to our gate to swap passengers. I also noticed that the trucks seemed to bunch up by the time they reached the exit gate for the track, so cars were held back at the start while they all went past to their pick up point. There were also buses and trikes using the same route as the trucks, so more vehicles to cross the exit gate, leading to more waiting time to get a lap done.
I picked up a passenger at 2:40 and said to the marshalls that i would stay out til 3:00 to give others some track time. I returned from that one lap 1/2 an hour later, as i had to wait for planes to take off, then the vulcan turned up.

I would like to thank everyone who turned out last Saturday . From your comments it would appear that you enjoyed the event all be it the organisation of the pit lane left a lot to be desired . I have not spoken with them yet as i would appreciate an email giving feedback from you guys .
SEE BELOW THE EMAIL I RECIEVED THIS MORNING :-

Hi everyone
In the first instance I would like to apologise to all the car gates, especially Steve from the London Tunnelers whom I badly let down , ,
it all started when Subaru came in on the Friday night and took out the cones between car gates 5 & 6 without us knowing to make one large Subaru gate with Roger Clark racing in it ( instead of separate gates ). That meant when all you car clubs arrived, you counted down the gates. Gates 1,2,3 and 4 were ok but after that everyone was in the wrong gate and this had the major impact of Steve and the London Tunnelers not having a gate and causing a little conflict between themselves and the GTR0C club.
Because of this the Tunnelers were without table, chairs, awning, etc which took us until 10:00 am before we could get the track underway.
Also because the Big Thunder track marshal Steve was taking his time letting the cars out onto the track, this caused a back log for you guys.
We realise now we had too many aircraft landing which to be fair should have been in a 5 minute window but the planes pleased themselves when they arrived.

Going forward we will try our hardest to not have any planes landing at all next year and the air show will be done in the air without landings.
Pat Jackson, the old track marshal will be back with us next year and he will keep things going.

Please again accept our sincerest apologies, especially Steve and the Tunnelers because this is the 1st time this thing has happened in the last 11 years and we will make sure it is the last.

Regards,
John and Chris.

The VULCAN flyby was worth the travel alone !

well it is nice that they have realised that there was a problem (no matter how obvious it was!) and sent out apologies for it, would be very easy just to ignore it! and to be fair EVERYONE that I spoke to said it had never been like that so fair doo's, mistakes happen, as long as lessons are learnt for next year I don't mind, its just a shame for the charity's really as they are the ones who really lose out!

Well that's an interesting version of events... I too had an apology from the organisers and from some of the Tunnelers team.

What actually happened was the GTROC arrived on the morning to find we had no gate slot whatsoever at gate 11 while the Tunnelers had a double slot at Gate 12 for their prefered "bus stop" method of car entry/exit when I pointed out something had gone wrong Steve got shirty. saying they needed more space as they made more money than the GTROC.

Steve (if he was the chap in the check shirt) called the organisers who arrived and moved the cones down just enough to create a slot for the GTROC and we found our own Table. Steve got stroppier by the minute while this was going on and at one point got on his phone and told the organisers they were going home.

At the end of the day GTROC made 1205.00 the tunnelers made under 800.00

That is what happened...

PS my 8th year at the event and front end of the car is peppered with stone chips as usual...

Well bugger me backwards, I thought this was about having fun and raising money for a good cause, not airing dirty washing in public and willy waving.

I find it all a little sad.

Honestly I apologise if I came across as stroppy. I was trying to figure out what had happened, we even sent someone off to the other end to count the gates to try and figure it out. It was only a minor glitch really and like you say we are all there for the same reason, don't wish to fall out.

good point from Kev and accepted from blue34

we were all there to raise funds and to give and have a good time and only got a little frustrated because we all wanted to do the best we could

here's to next year ;beer:

WE are all there for the same reason!, how true

We all want as much track time as possible: true

We dont want lots of arguments to spoil our day: true

We need more track time to generate more cash so we need less private lanes landing.

We need to work together to make sure all the clubs/individuals who are taking their time and spending their fuel enjoy themselves so enough cars continue in future years.

I also think a code of conduct for the way cars come in and out of gates should be inlace for next year and this "code" should be generated by the clubs who support the events so we dont end up having to have rules in place which would spoil the feel for the day.

Could all of you who have any comments or thoughts on a code please recopy and paste your reply so we build up a plan for next year, if its left to next year we will have the same problems again.

Driving Code ( Gentleman's code of conduct for OYM).

1. There is one lane for queuing up for track entrance, dont drive down the gate line to sneak in at the front this just winds everybody patently queuing up.

2. Dont stop you car in the queuing lane and wave all your mates in in front of you and wind everybody up behind you.

3. Dont give your gate Marshalls carte Blanche to stop the queuing line to let their club cars out, cue up like everyone else

3. Never continue for more than one lap without pulling in.

4. As you pull into the gate line try to get out of the pit entry line as fast as possible as cars will end up stuck on the track with Trucks coming up behind them

Just some thoughts i remember having on the day

Hi Andy, haven't you got a high pitched scream, must have concerned the passenger to hear the driver screaming though rofl

I know what you mean about the day I not sure I even registered that a yellow Ultima was on the track let alone that it might be yours

we're at the NEC but only for the Friday, first NEC we'll have missed since joining but we've been invited to a friend's birthday do that got changed to that Saturday and as it involves visting a few of our favourite pubs on the 1961 Bristol single decker (beer bus) (Gardner 5 cylinder diesel, top speed 40 mph) and ending at our favourite local I don't think we'll be that presentable for the Sunday
Hi Nigel, I cut the video after my scream and before the passenger started crying!! laugh Looks like I'l probably miss you at the NEC, as I'm planning to be there for the weekend at the moment. Never mind, see you at one of the events soon. Cheers Andy

Agree with most of that. On point 3, some passengers do pay for 2 laps, so fair enough if it's a paying customer to do the extra. It has worked a lot better for the pevious 6 years that I've been there, so this was a bit of a one off, but your points are pretty valid for this year. Going back to last year format next time will resolve many of the problems this year. See you there...

The biggest problem that I saw was an increase from nine to 12 car clubs trying to run from the same length of pit. Solving that isn't going to come from us.

wise editing Andy laugh

we're at SBDR at Coventry Festival of Motoring, Stoneliegh Park this Sunday

got my celebrations confused, the one I put above was last weekend, NEC weekend is beer bus to pubs ending at my mate's Potbelly brewery listening to Dr Busker and his revolting peasants and trying not to drink too much Potbelly Crazy Daze to save clean car upholstery paperbag

I agree about the space being squeezed

not wishing to take away from Steve's Gate but in the overall interest of the event, as you saw a Gate for Atoms, or Atoms plus Gate, or just more Atoms would work well and relieve pressure on the Gates, last year it was up to a 75 minute wait for the single Atom

4-6 Atoms (plus booking and loading helpers if own Gate) would mean plenty of track time for the drivers but also the possibility of a rest for the cars and drivers

I'd take a guess at well over a hundred overall. Often stacked up along the pit lane going nowhere. There were just too many for the amount of track time.
