Anyone else thinking of going on their own to this tour? Think am about to book my place, but just curious as I've never been on such a tour/road trip (all my friends are either broke, married, busy or all of the above etc), but this seems epic so I may just go for it anyway!

I did it on my own last year. The Mrs didn't want to come so I just did it and had a great time.

You stop fairly regularly for points of interest/lunch etc so you get to socialise with everyone but then get back in the car and you can do all the fun driving. All the other cars were two up and I think they got fed up with each other sometimes so a few days I had company for some legs of the journey and of course everyone is out for food and a drink in the evenings.

All the people on the trip were great and 10 days away from the Mrs was great.....umm, I meant really hard but I struggled through.

There'll be plenty of like minded people there so there'll be no shortage of people to befriend. As said above, the people sharing the other cars will be sick of each of and more than happy to speak to complete strangers biggrin

hehe Agreed, can't imagine how you survived 10 days away from the Mrs, bet you were over the moon when you got back home.

Sounds great then! Also seems like you did the tour as a solo driver, do you think its worth the extra over going with another person? Might go for that if that's the case.

Hi Mo,

It's totally up to you in terms of whether you want to have a car to yourself or share one.
There are pro's and cons on both sides.

The social side is a key part of the trip but you wont miss out even if you're driving on your own as everyone gets a walkie talkie so the banter continues throughout the day.

If you like driving all the time (or are not a good passenger wink ) then go for the solo driver option.
The days are not overly tiring in that respect and as i said above you won't feel alone at any point.

If you may sometimes want to sit back and enjoy your surroundings, take pictures etc whilst on the move and have someone share the driving then it wont be tough to find someone to share with you.

Whichever option you choose you will be included. We don't allow 'cliques', everyone on tour looks after each other, effectively, you're going on holiday with a bunch of mates you haven't met yet.

Thanks for the reply, I think that should seal it on both counts. I'm not a great passenger (but then who is!), but you make a good point re the social aspect, wanting to enjoy the surroundings and taking pictures (something I do alot of and enjoy massively), so going with someone may be the way to go for me.

Yep, I did all the driving. For me the days (driving time wise) were pretty much spot on, any more and it would have started to become tiring on a couple of days. Some of the roads are amazing fun and I'm glad I got to drive every minute of each one!

As Harsh says, there's plenty of banter over the walkie talkies which can be fun.

Ah thanks for confirming.. I was just thinking of sharing with someone else..

You pretty much confirmed my thoughts re the driving solo bit, it is kind of a once in a life-time experience, so I think I'll go for that instead (rather than regret it later).

I'm booked up and going alone! I have asked a few friends but i have a feeling they won't be going. Definitely once in a lifetime thing for me.

28 male, sensible driver, non snorer, lover of French cars! If anyone wants to buddy up that's cool with me providing you're relatively normal smile! I've opted for a Corvette if possible. Should be awesome, can't wait.

Sounds great ...
but not in any imagination is it a bargain ... £1700 for car rental and B+B.
I'm sure i could do it for a lot less on my own.

I'm sure you could... but not in these cars, with these hotels, with satnavs & walkie-talkies, and with two tour managers to take care of everything for you.
The roads aren't chosen by google or by accident, this is years of research and experience.
Having 3 meals a day with 30 like-minded individuals is fun too, especially when you have so much to talk about - the roads, the scenery, and the "moments".

You probably could do something similar but you wouldn't have anywhere near half as much fun. You get value for every penny of this trip. Having been initially unsure about an organised tour, we loved each and every minute of it, & we couldn't have wished to meet a nicer bunch of like minded people.

Lots of awesome driving during the day, a few beer and some good burger in the evening and loads of biglaugh all the time.

(We didn't actually eat burgers every evening but it was the only food smiley I could find wink )

Just looking at a Camaro SS for 15 days, works out at £1200 ...

Divided by two for me and a mate, that's £600 each for over two weeks!

As we all know motels in the USA are cheap as chips ... Happy days!

You are right.
Hertz do a Mustang for £475 / week and accomodation is around $60 per night.
I may be an anti social old git - but when i do these trips I prefer to do it with the gf/misses/best mate and stop and go where and when I want.
But... I can see the attraction for others, so good luck to you all. Or should i say y'all.

Have you seen what $60/night gets you?
It doesn't get you a nice room on the beach, nor does it get you a suite in a strip hotel in Las Vegas... but you do get what you pay for wink

+1 ... Each to there own ... That's what makes us all individuals ...
Oh, and if you look in the right places and do you're homework both $60 a room ( or $60 per person a room if you're splitting things individually) can get you some very nice accommodation and this I speak from experience.

Funny how those who have been on these trips with us in the past come on (without any promoting from us) to say how much fun they have and how good value it is.

Whilst those who have not come on tour with us feel they know better then anyone else biggrin

If it's not your cup of tea, then fair enough, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same thing.
We encourage and more often than not help people to build their own trips if that's what they prefer.
We work to budgets for them and for these trips too to make sure that the PH trips are everything you could wish for.

Nowhere will you see us telling people not to do things on a budget that suits them whether it's higher or lower than this trip. All we care about is making sure that anyone who talks to us gets exactly what they want, in fact we work hard to exceed expectations, it's up to our customers to tell us if we achieve that - and they do, regularly.

However sometimes it appears that offering an amazing tour, with full support which is exceptional value for money just isn't enough to stop the odd person from suggesting we're doing something wrong by running a business.

Ah well, I guess we will just have to console ourselves by showing everyone who is coming with us the time of their lives smile

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion and forums like this is are a fantastic place for people to air there views.
I for one won't be emailing those that disagree with me to find out why either.
Anyway ... Since when where we allowed to promote and sell our businesses on PistonHeads ... I know I certainly can't sell what I do here.
