Mille Miglia 2015
Discussion
I have followed it around the past couple of years.
Book your flights and hotel near Brescia early (its expensive to stay in Brescia the night before the start - but there are some lovely places within 10 miles that will be cheap enough if you book early). Get there the day before the start if possible.
Car parking is not as difficult as people think. There is an underground parking at Piazza della Vittoria but access is to restricted to one route in for the event. This piazza the one to the north (Loggia) and the one to the west (Paulo VI) and down the road via X Giornate are where the cars gather from the night before, through to a few hours before the start.
Cars head off to the other start of the start line about 2-3 hours before the start. Take your time and walk down via X Giornate, Corse Giuseppe Zanardelli, Corso Magenta, Piazale Arnaldo and then onto Viale Venezia - look into the lovely clothes shops on the way. Buy any Mille Miglia Merchandise before the event starts as its difficult to get hold of at the end. The start is on Vialle Venezia, approx opposite the junction with Via Nicostrato Castellini. Cool to watch the first few cars go over the start - it can then be a little boring so I have headed back towards Piazzale Anarldo again where you can pick a spot to drink or eat while the cars fly past. The past 2 years they have headed out of town via Via Mantova - as they come through the two bends there many cars do a bit of show boating - there is a cheapish cafe between the two bends after Piazzale Anarldo.
Strategy for the following the event. Have a hire car - leave Brescia after you have seen the first 100-200 cars leave town - head down the motorway (A4 West) a couple of exits to catch up with the cars, then drop back onto the SS11 to mix with the cars a little - heading toward the night time destination.
If you are travelling with the wife, I would plan a nice restaurant on route to stop and have a nice dinner - maybe watch the cars fly by (or not). I always plan on staying a few towns down the road from the overnight stop (hotels will be cheaper, and as the cars typically leave the overnight stop around 6ish so would prefer to be 1-2 hours down the road). The cars don't travel down the Autoroutes, so you can use this to catch up/overtake, or get to your overnight stop quicker. I have not bothered to go all the way down to Rome as it its a long way... Rather head across to Bologna/Florence outlet stores or Maranello/Modena to take in the museums or restaurants.
Do make sure you get to Siena the morning the cars come through. That is not to be missed. Park outside the main city or even better - there is a Hotel San Marco, just off the Autoroute. It has a car park, and you can leave the car there. There is a bus across the road to take you into the old city. Near the bus stop is a lovely and cheap pizza place (Pizzeria La Colonna Di Burroni Francesco) great for the night before.
The cars come at a very slow pace through the old city - often in long queues of 50-80 cars. I would recommend finding a restaurant with roadside tables on the road just off the square the cars are using to come into the square through. Order your lunch and enjoy being able to chat to the drivers as they pass and sit in the traffic 2ft from where you sit eating your lunch.
After that, you can follow as you wish, the route a bit different this year, not appearing to go through Maranello. Near Parma, the last nights stopover, there is a great outlet shopping place called Fidenza - worth a visit if with the other half. I would probably see if I could spend the last night up in Bergamo - hotels are cheap near the Airport, but up in Citta Alta, above Bergamo is Beautiful. There is limited parking up there and road access is time limited or you could go another way (bus etc.). It is a must if you are in town. There are many really good restaurants up here too. The best we ate at was Colleoni Dell'Angelo - V. Expensive, but very good. Many other good cheaper restaurants as well.
The end of the rally is a lot quieter than the start - lots of cars still around - and people walking around with the trophies they have won.
I am not planning on going this year, but will try and do the Monaco Classic GP, the big auctions, then the Mille Miglia and Monaco GP over 2 weeks in 2016, if I can. Would love to participate in the MM if I could... thats an aim of mine at the moment.
I hope this has been helpful.

Thanks for the information very useful. We are driving down, aiming to be in Brescia for the day of departure, as the first stage is through the night will not be following. We have booked a hotel in Parma to coincide with the Saturday night stopover so will take in other places of interest on the Friday. Let me know if you ever mange to enter.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.
Hi.Just picked up your thread about this event. I have booked to go down to watch this having thought about doing it for a while.
I have booked a hotel in Sirmione for a couple of days for the start and then had a hotel booked in Bologna for the Saturday night. I see the route has been changed and it is now going through Parma.
I am going to change the Bologna hotel for one in Parma, but wonder whether you know how to get a detailed map of the route (the one on the official website is to high level) to work out where to stay?

We are staying at the Starhotels Du Parc on the Saturday night, and a different hotel the Friday and Sunday, due to booking cockup, meeting a friend of mine who is flying into Milan and driving down, think he is staying there a couple of nights. We are now setting about the route home, was intending going along the coast to France and up but due to the Monaco GP the weekend after everything is prety booked or expensive.
We're driving down to Sirmoine for the start and then a couple of days before travel to Parma and staying at the Astoria on Via Trento which is in the centre but has a car park on the Saturday. Should then get to see the cars and the following crowd on a number of occasions fitting in the Ferrari museum in Marenello on the way down.
I am then travelling down to Rome for four days so that Mrs W can remain happy before travelling back up the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
I have done that drive before so have a place to stay with parking just outside the Centre but near the underground.
Will be in the Z4 Coupe so looking forward to it.
What will you be driving and I will look out for you.
