Silverstone Classics 2015
Discussion
I wandered off to Silverstone yesterday. I got there around 8am and left about 5pm and the only variation in the weather was how hard it rained.
Following out normal day itinerary, we strolled around the pits, club stands and commercial tents in the morning, had lunch in the car and then went to watch the qualifying. But all we saw was the pace car leading the cars around.
It was well worth going but as this is a regular of mine, there were few cars I hadn't seen before.
Some pits were closed off but every time I asked if I could enter for to take some pictures, I was welcomed.
The photographs lack a bit of fizz due to the poor light. I'll put some up later. As I've got 2.49GB, I'll probably not post them all.
We normally leave late in the day to avoid the traffic but due to the lack of action, and feeling a bit tired after walking for 5 hours, we left at 5, had a meal at the services before the M40, left at 6.45 and I got home to Burgess Hill at 9.30.

For me this event has again been a disappointment for several reasons. Sadly for me it isn't a race meeting like the Goodwood Revival, it's a place for people to meet, look at some cars, do a bit of shopping and eat and drink and watch some music. That is of course fine and I enjoyed spending time with friends which was fun as always. However at 65 quid a head plus another 50 a head in nosh and drinks it needs to provide better racing, which were often pale imitations of historic racing with rag tag grids racing on a track where they look like ants as you're so far away and most places. I walked 12 miles around the place a few times and outside the centre old pits areas it was dead. All the cars you want to see were where the masses weren't in the new pits. Also a Spitfire air display that lasted 2 passes and an F1 demonstration that had 7 cars for 3 laps mainly 40 seconds off the pace was a joke. I had a great day but frankly that was sod all to do with Silverstone.
Silverstone in my mind had never looked after its punters since I first went in 1979 for the GP till yesterday. You sit in a cheap stand or stand on a badly made banking and you can admire the lovely BRDC building or new Wing pits and all that does is emphasise how utter crap the rest of the place is and yet again where Silverstone sees its punters and I say that as a person who has been able to access both BRDC and Wing! At least they have toilets but I can't help but feel they take the piss with fence after fence and half arsed viewing facilities 70 percent of which were shut off yesterday. It's a crap place to watch motor racing and that's sad as once it was great. I have been spoilt by living through the best of Group 4/5, Group 1/2 & A and of course Group C and I have been spoilt by seeing the finest grids with some great drivers on the fantastic spectators track at Goodwood, but Silverstone feels half assed. Even the commentators were commenting on how bad some of the turn outs were, such as the stupid few laps for some 90's sports cars, which had a GT1 Porsche and pretty much back of field stuff. No Macca's, no Mercs, no XJ220's, no F40's etc etc.
Sorry for me it was terrible value and a real disappointment as a race event.

Just got back and left early as the weather was shocking. I felt for the trade stands, who after suffering friday's all day deluge must of had enough.
I have wanted to go to this meeting for many years but have been unable. To be honest probably wont rush back. Been to Le Mans Classic and Spa Classic and much much better value for money. I know the weather must have had something to do with it but this event felt small compared to others.
Why couldn't the organisers let us sit in the covered grandstands, which were completely empty by the way. Would have made sense in my view and we probably would have stayed longer.

Well that was my first and it was very much my last Silverstone Classic. OK the weather didn't help but I feel I was ripped off!! Events like this have to decide - either they are a pre-order ticket event OR they are pay on the day event. I didn't want to go if it was going to be wet, but as they advertised that it was pre-order only I had to make a decision and pay my £52 last week ....... and then on Friday morning they announced they tickets would be on sale on the day!! In my view it's little short of FRAUD!!!! I enjoyed meeting up with a few friends and I thought the new Morgan looked terrific, but this event should not be mentioned in the same breath as Goodwood, LeMans Classic or Spa. Never again for me
