Has the migrant problem put anyone off driving to or in those countries? I'm vaguely thinking of the Czech republic in April.

Drove to Prague and back via various French, Black Forest and Czech beauties last June.
Enjoy it. Lots of great B roads and fast roads.

I rethought my plans for a quick trip to Cologne with the missus, but otherwise I am sure reports of Germany turning into some sort of Skip for the world's problems are greatly exaggerated. Last time I was there I had an epic time. Just got another beemer too so a trip to Munich is on the cards.

Ignore the stories.

Some great roads. And they do have nice cars over in Europeland too. So you won't be too out of place.

Just FYI I saw more Astons in Prague than I did Germany. I drove 2.000 miles last Summer around France, Germany, Czech. Holland, Belgium.

Germany's great roads aren't the autobhans IMO (although they're fast....), check out the country roads. Beautiful country, as is Czech. Karlovy Vary - fantastic. Prague. Beautiful. Colditz. Great. And many other places:

Its fine in Czech Republic, Poland and Germany. I live in Czech and drive frequently to all three and have had no problems whatsoever.

That is on my route later this year, after visiting Saxon Switzerland.
Did you stay in Karlovy? , if so where did you stay

Grand Hotel Pupp (the hotel from Casino Royale). Very nice. Not that pricey for what it is.

As its a car forum...

Not the first Aston in the hotel car park...

I tried to post pics of the views from the hotel, of the river and town, but couldn't get it to a small enough size after 6 attempts at reducing the size. Suffice to say it's very colourful, elegant and pretty!

I was warned that it would be crammed with Russians but was very quiet in fact (late June time).

The video is a small section of the road from Marianske Lazne (another pretty place) to Karlovy.

That's a shame. The hotel hosts the Czech film festival as well, so the town can be busy. Booking.com was great at finding the hotels last year. There were a few others of similar standard there.
Do let us know how you get on.

Thanks for mentioning Marianske Lazne, have decided to stay there, as K V was very booked up for our dates.

Looks v. nice. Karlovy is a nice drive anyway, for a day trip. Marianske was very pretty from memory, although I only drove through. But I recall elegant looking cafes with people sitting outside, some cobbled streets and pretty gardens and flowers with similar architecture to Karlovy. Not much of a tourist guide am I?!? smile

Could be better wink did you use the main road from K V to Marianske, or the scenic route, cross country looks like an interesting road lick
Not too many cobbled streets I hope, although my Alpina suspension should cope bounce

I went up the 230 - cross country. Nice road (not sure if there are any other better routes). That's where this video was taken, follows the river:

Ended up at the reservoir near KV.

Not too many cobbled roads - only when I took a backstreet after a wrong turn smile

What other places are there on your route? Here's my full route from last year, http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

It was difficult to choose the route - so many great places to choose from! smile

The 230 is the road I was thinking of taking.
My trip would seem to be the reverse of yours.
I will be be starting in Dunkirk, over night in Kassel
A couple of days in Leipzig, to Dresden for a couple of days via Meissen.
Then follow the Elbe and spend a few days in Saxon Switzerland, stunning part of Germany near the Czech border.
Via Decin to Karlovy Vary, then overnight in Marianske Lazne.
Haven't finalised the route back to blighty yet, but might spend some time in Normandy.

Took the motorhome over, via Berlin to Poland last summer. It was excellent, then headed south into Czech then back west into Germany. All lovely and no sign of any migrant issues or trouble. Poland & Czech - fuel & food very very inexpensive. Autobahn from Berlin (original Hitler highway, so sectional concrete) to Poznan (EU money funded and super smooth) was straight as a die for miles. Roads suffers a little off the major route but it's not too bad at all.
Recommended and we're going to go back next year

I found the 230 on a bikers forum from a few years back. smile
As I wrote last year, I really enjoyed the German B roads around the borders. More so than the autobhan, which is good for the odd blast! Able to make progress but also very deserted, quite well maintained and very picturesque. May just have been lucky.

Your route sounds pretty cool. Will look at Saxon Switzerland as I haven't planned any trips yet this year and need to get a move on.

Have fun and be sure to post a few pics.

Being in Kent has it's advantages, not too far to cross the pond and access fabulous places.

Just a taste smile

I vaguely recall seeing this on the map when planning last year. If only I'd googled a little further!! Looks stunning. Oh well, I'll just have to go back there smile
