You don't have to apologise to anyone, you had as much right to be out there as anyone else. On a track day the onus is usually on the car behind to do lions share of the work to pass. You simply accommodate and authorise.
Cheers for that, I was actually quite proud that I wasn't overtaken, the Elise was a far better track car than most on there so I felt like I did well. What I meant was I apologise if I did any daft overtakes, I know of one that was a bit questionable but that was on my friend Gib, who I've already apologised to! Can't wait to get back out on track and improve some more

Fair enough!

I was just thinking that in my eyes Novice is for either total beginners or people who are still learning.
Intermediate is for more experienced people and this is where you may end up with M3's and Clio's coming flying up your backside.

I've never done a "Novice" session, all my previous trackdays were open-pit lane but it's generally a lot safer
for everyone if the people who are pushing are all on track with other people who are pushing smile

Hence why maybe the Novice session would have been a little better especially if lacking in confidence!

I didn't really see any issues personally on my session aside from the White GT4. I mentioned a Grey E46 M3, but being the intermediate session and considering myself to be fairly well observed I was able to see he was on a mad one and move out of his way in good time smile
Had it of been a Novice session I'd have been annoyed at his behaviour but in the Intermediate class that's the type of driving you get. smile

Saying that, I made the mistake of missing a red flag so drove round again! laugh

Not at all, the novice sessions are described as being for those who have never driven on track before. We have (Nurburgring, plus Goodwood and Donington with PH the most notable). Plus we let people through when there's a faster car. I have a few photos of my wife letting cars pass on the pit straight so.....

The problem sometimes is that if you let people go you end up with people who aren't faster shooting through the opening and you then have to work to get past them again. It's a pain but it's a track taster session at the end of the day. You take the rough with the smooth.

There was none of this complaining at the Donington SS. Not sure what it is about this one that's brought the moaners out laugh

Having seen some terrible driving from some of the other people on her session it is hard to accept too much criticism, but we're both very open about the fact that we have plenty to learn. I just wish others were!

Round the 4.20 mark think that's you?

And again at 24:30

I need to go through my footage as I seem to recall a car spinning in front of me but don't remember what it was.
Yep, that's me! I prefer the clip at 24:30 when I had a lot more confidence (and I think it sounds great) than the clip at 4:20 where I didn't know what I was doing!

Point taken. I don't feel we need to be on a novice session particularly, but it was the first time driving that car on track with others. I was quite shocked in all honesty at just how badly it handled the tighter corners, although I already knew the brakes would cook quickly.

It's given me a lot to think about. Some of the planned upgrades have now moved higher up the list!

Hopefully it will be much improved come the Goodwood SS in December....

Andy was on track at 11:55 in the white MR2 and I lent him my camera, you can see the Focus making clouds at the end of the first clip... https://youtu.be/WBuS2ViIr0k as well as the Noble getting things wrong in front of the Caterham on the first lap of part 2... https://youtu.be/DedN_BGIv0Q

As well as having that on film, I was sat watching in the grandstand and also managed to get a few stills of the Noble going backwards through clouds of tyre smoke. I took over 1000 photos in that 11:55 session so probably need to delete a lot of blurry ones when I was trying to be too artistic but if you send me a message with your car and email address I'm happy to email any decent ones I did get when I finally go through them.
Ah the shame, that Noble may possibly have been me... If there was ever any doubt whether I or the car have more capability then I think that's settled! Simply braked too late and had the rear unweighted when turning into the apex - the car had so much grip (Pirelli Trofeo R's are amazing btw!) that it took me quite by surprise and I didn't make much of an attempt to save it, so just tried to roll backwards out of the way - glad the guy in the Caterham took avoiding action and apologies for making that necessary! Otherwise had a great first ever track session, car was amazing and was great to see what it can really do (even in my hands :P)

I'm not saying that you are novice drivers but it perhaps may have given you that extra bit of breathing room you guys would have needed smile

Brakes are the most important thing on the day I think!

Luckily I upgraded mine before doing any engine tuning. DB9 calipers, Audi TTS 340mm discs and Project Mu H16 pads with fluid every 18 months.. good enough for me. I had no fade at all ..

My biggest bugbear was oil temperature, I do wonder how many people in turbocharged cars could see theirs?
Mine went from 98 (around normal) to 114 degrees within 2 laps, 120 degrees is the most I'm happy to run really. I saw 127 peak.
Anything above that you are asking for trouble, as that is sump temperature so head / turbo temps must be well into the 130s!
I run competition 10w50 oil as well (5w30 specified).

I saw several cars pounding round lap after lap and either they have much better OEM coolers than me or they simply didn't monitor/care. I will have a seperate oil cooler by Goodwood smile

I was in the Orange 7 in the 1120 session and I also thought the driving standards were generally excellent (I just hope no one identifies me as an exception!). Tux Man's green Noble was pretty special, as were some of the M3s, the white GT3 and his mate in the Grey 911 in the last session, and the Subaru P1 in the car park.

Thanks to PH and Silverstone.

Have you got a good source for these? I need some new pads for my MR2 Roadster.
I haven't, I was given a set when I bought my car (fitted the rears 2am on Sunday morning)

I was told the cheapest option was importing them directly - still not cheap but IMO having tried both they are twice as good as the Yellowstuff (ie double the benefit compared to standard pads, obviously not half the distance)

Thanks for sharing! I was in the STI Hatchback in front of you (first track day!) so its great to see from your angle my driving line!
Doesn't look like I was too bad but lots of improvements to get after!
I keep on saying to my friends who were also on the track, Barrington90 and Giblet, what a cracking experience it was!
Definitely have the passion for track days now!
I thought generally (for a Novice session as well) the standard of driving behaviour on track was good!

oil temps can be a big problem , especially in the Noble , very large front mounted cooler with a high flow sandwich plate helps massivly !! i also run 10w 60 which coped with the higher temps ok . after a full 30 mins i had 108 degrees oil temp !! there are also lots of holes to allow the heat out the engine bay and i removed the front number plate too . its the first SS i have done where i have been on track and it was fun !! bit surprised people get frustrated at getting held up its just a fun session . no shame in lifting off and waiting for a safe place to pass . i thought the 11.20 session was good fun .

I had a great time yesterday on track (Black 911 Cab), the car was handling great and the track conditions were good too.

The 9am session was intermediate though and although the driving standards looked generally good, having read some of the comments about the 9am session I think some people should have opted for the beginners sessions, particularly if you're going to be scared/peeved by cars overtaking you when you havent politely indicated and moved to the right.

Intermediate is exactly that and attracts a mix of skills and car performance, but all should have "intermediate" track skills, observation and experience. Sure everyone should follow the guidelines, but this is the real world. How many times have you ridden dodgems and bumped someone even thought the sign clearly says "no bumping"!

Personally I overtook only on the left and only when safe or invited to do so, but you can't be phased out by someone overtaking you in a wide corner in a faster car when you're at a track day in the inters session or really should you be there?

Haha yet just a little! smile

Unfortunately no, I don't have a Tele lense and I don't think a 10-18 does very well getting people on track! Quite a few people whom I wanted to get photos for but didn't frown

Don't hold it against me!
